Bodie's past catching up with him, with some unexpected results for Doyle. Plus I just like the atmosphere of the story. "Ambush" I keep changing my mind about this one, I also keep going back to it. In some ways it could be classed as over stepping the mark in taste. Its the emotional violence (not so much the phyical violence, though there is quite a bit of that) that fascinates me with the story. The emotional torture the two charactors inflict on each other, it reminds me of a vicious circle. Though Doyle at the end of the story seems to thinlc everything is going to be okay. I don't agree with him, this is one story that needs a follow up. The type of story which doesn't appeal to me are the ones where Bodie and Doyle's charactors are distorted as to be unrecognisable. Hot headed, razor tongued, I'm a Capricorn myself and I'd say Capricorn's are stubborn and self willed more than anything else.[1]

I liked the story; it got me hot; and I'm just not in analytical mood at the mo. Fine with me if nobody else liked it! [2]

This was one of the first Pros stories I ever read and I was enthralled. It’s a deeply dark tale of anger, denial, lust and (?perceived) betrayal. In this story Bodie & Doyle’s 7 year partnership in CI5 is turning sour… “Doyle wasn’t as certain of Bodie as he once would have been. Too many close calls lately, not counting this one. And Bodie’s persistent silence did nothing to reassure him”.The tension created by the conflict between Bodie & Doyle during the operation which opens the story is terrific, on-the edge stuff. We are reminded forcibly that the Lads are a pair of difficult sods and that life in CI5 is bloody, treacherous and short. And if you can’t rely on your partner……
In ‘Ambush’, the Professionals’ staple ingredients, guns and violence, help weave an erotic web that catches first Doyle, then Bodie in its filaments. As for how the story ends, I find it can be read a number of ways, although I prefer the more hopeful interpretation. Read it and see for yourself! [3]

'November' was wonderful, and 'Ambush' is one of my all time *least* favorite stories--certainly Thomas story I like least. In 'November', and others of this ilk, Bodie and Doyle have a strong attraction and even love for each other--they are also fucked up, confused, violent men, with pasts and natures that make it hard for them to love and communicate.
In 'Ambush', Bodie and Doyle have a strong attraction for each other, and they are fucked up. Love each other? Like each other? Respect each other? Not just no, but fuck no. Assuming you could get past all of that, and still be reading during the (beautifully written) sex scene, and the ambiguous but still hopeful ending--do you really think that these two men can continue to work together? Doyle really thought that Bodie was going to kill him, and Bodie knows that. Trust? I don't THINK so...[4]
