"After seven years..." is a long story by trueriver based on Mary Renault's 1953 novel The Charioteer. It is set seven years after the end of the novel. The war is now over; and Laurie and Ralph are living together.

On the day of Laurie's thirtieth birthday party, his editor assigns him a new story to write, on Quakers and the War Effort. Among the list of contacts is Andrew. With Ralph away on an expedition for the Geographical Society, Laurie's reunion with Andrew becomes...complicated.

"After seven years..." was written for a Seven Years After challenge done by trueriver and poicale as one of their Sunday Tea writing projects.

Comments on the story included the following:

  • "You constructed this story so well I believed it as I read. Good job." — comment by slipperieslope
  • "I never used to be able to imagine any way for Laurie and Andrew to ever meet again but this story just rings true. Wonderful :)" — comment by queen_ypolita
  • "I am trying to think about this objectively, which is hard, you know my feelings in regards to Ralph...but even if one leaves Ralph out of the picture, and his pain - the whole Laurie/Andrew thing here just feels wrong, with Andrew getting married and all..." — comment by cyberducks
