Summary
Buck doesn’t think that if he were to say, “I’m in a bad place”, that anyone would turn him away. Really, he doesn’t. The 118 has too many good, kind people for that.But every time he wants to open his mouth, to say something, to reach out to Eddie or Bobby or Hen or Chim, he hears Eddie yelling, “you’re exhausting.”

So each day he does his job and he laughs and he jokes and he pretends he’s the care-free goofball he’s always been. And each day he packs away his bruises and his worries, takes them home to his empty loft with its quiet rooms, and licks his wounds in silence.

This is one of the very few post-lawsuit fics that hit just right. Everyone is in character. Everyone is treated fairly, and we get an insight into people's heads. It's wonderful, and nuanced and introduced an OC, Cole, that reminded me of Red, and though he wasn't a big part of the fic, I feel like he was an amazing addition to Buck's journey here. Buddie's getting together is adorable, and it features our boys being dorks and I just LOVE it.[3]
Buck deals with the aftermath of the tsunami and the lawsuit and struggles to accept that he’s not a burden. It’s a very very good fic ![4]

I first got into 9-1-1 fanfic because I didn't like how the ladder truck/lawsuit storyline was resolved in the show. Unfortunately, I found that it was difficult to find fic that explored it in a nuanced way - this fic is the exception and it's probably the best exploration of that era that I've ever read.[7]

Dude, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to reread that one. Call me weak but oh my god it was just too fucking angsty. I guess I was in a bad spot mentally when I read it for the first time, too, so that only made it worse XD I think I may have even read it while I was still binging through season 3, the lawsuit arc still so fresh, and yeah that was a touch arc for me, lmao. Damn. It’s such a good fic.[8]
