A Meeting of Equals is a Jim/Blair story by Lady Ra.

Reactions and Reviews

After the fight over that first chapter, Blair runs away from home. Well, sort of. What he really does is go off to find himself another college where he can finish his dissertation and maybe take stock of his life and decide what he wants to do next. He stays in touch with Jim the entire time and the story is from Jim's POV, watching from a distance as Blair digs deep into himself to find the man he really wants to be.

Okay, so I'm going to just come right out and say it: I have a huge issue with the fact that, while Blair spends the entire story learning about himself, apologizing to Jim, and coming out a better and stronger person, Jim spends most of the story acting like an asshole. And his entire apology (coming near the end of the story, after something like three months of passive aggressive silence) is two lines long and doesn't actually include the word 'sorry' anywhere. Because of this, I dithered over whether I should rec or rant about this story since the moment I first read it.

In the end, I'm reccing this story because Blair's personal journey is the focus of the fic and it is *incredible*. While he is sometimes too hard on himself, he does a brilliant job of dredging up his worst traits, facing them head on, and deciding what to do about them. It is a moving story of personal growth and you can't help but root for him as he slowly becomes more comfortable with himself and with the changes he's decided to make in his life. By the end of the story, I wanted to cheer out loud and hug Blair silly (seriously, it's like watching Rudy or one of those other silly sports movies that shamelessly manipulate you so that you are grinning like a fool at the end). A must-read for all Blair fans.[1]

This one deserves a rec and a rant! I like the fic, but also have issues with Jim's behavior and Blair glossing over it so easily. He left because Jim was such an ass. It's almost 'guys who love too much and the jerks they fall for' territory.[2]

I know -- it borderlines on unhealthy. I just choose to believe that, now that he's gotten his own shit together, Blair will feel fully confident enough to call Jim on his own shit. Loudly and quite often:)...I love most of this story as well (except for the Jim parts). That said, I know that I can sometimes be oversensitive about the fine line between 'boys being boys' and 'bullying' and I consider a lot of characters (*cough*johnsheppard, arthurpendragon*cough*) to be on the wrong side of that line. Most of fandom appears to disagree with me, though, so YMMV:) [3]

There are several reasons why this must be read. First is that the next story in line to be rec’d is, well, not for everyone. So I wanted to give those whom will not to read that story a long story to read. Also, gasp, language aside*f-bombs*, this is about as PG as I am going to get. Yet, and Most importantly why No one should miss this story, it is the MOST intimate look inside and about Jim and Blair I have Ever read! The honest emotions that both men have to face are an awesome process to read. I felt more of a voyeur reading this than when the two are steaming up the sheets.[4]

Summary: After Jim and Blair fight over the dissertation in "Night Shift", Blair decides to leave in order to figure out who he is and has become. He enrolls in another university in order to get his PhD without compromising Jim. In the meantime, he keeps in touch with Jim through phone calls, letters and emails, letting him in on some painful home truths he's discovered. Reccer's Notes: Although it's a little heavy on "mea culpa" theme, it is believable that Blair would question himself, especially when he felt Jim questioned his worth. By the end of the show, they were so in each other's pockets that it wasn't always healthy, so it's interesting to see Lady Ra take on this subject. Enjoy.[5]
