Author's Description

From "In the Planning Stages" of Datazine #38 (1985): "Dr. McCoy gives Mr. Spock an ultimatum; marry and have his wife serve aboard the Enterprise with him or accept a ground assignment. Spock mediates on his choices, Dr. Christine Chapel or Commander Upenda Uhura. The result is adventure, marriage, romance, and some real surprises. Age statement required."

Reactions and Reviews

A Gift Beyond Price' by Marie Voisard is my favorite kind of zine, no artwork, no poetry, just a spellbinding 213-page story. AGBP opens with Dr. McCoy telling Spock that either he must marry within the next six months or leave the Enterprise. After his initial outrage at the Doctor's interference in his personal life, Spock sees the logic of Dr. McCoy's order as pon farr is approaching again. It came as no surprise to me that Spock decides to marry Dr. Christine Chapel, but then the real fun starts. As far as Spock is concerned, the matter is settled. His difficulty lies in telling Christine. Spock's attempts to court Christine are wildly amusing but very in character. But what a change in Christine! We had seen many of her fine qualities in the TV series, her kindness, gentleness, and intelligence. However, she also came across as a bit of a wimp. Now Christine is portrayed as I always wished to see her, emotionally mature, a very strong women with a lot to offer. The zine is basically about the early married life of Spock and Christine, although it is not only a love story. There is a strong, extended mission which complicated and threatens Spock and Christine's attempts to determine their own future. Scotty is also semi-featured. I have never been much of a fan of Scotty, but I was very impressed by how likable and caring a character he was in this zine. The author has a talent for getting a depth in her characters. In particular, her women stand out in a genre which is mainly about men. All of the characters are written with warmth, affection, and humor. Be warned: there is a good amount of explicit sex! I highly recommend this zine for the story as well as for the portrayals of the characters. It is easily worth the money just to read about the gift beyond price, (and it isn't love). If I had any complaint, it would be that I want more.[1]
