A Dog of Flanders is a novel by British author Ouida published in 1872. It tells the story of Nello and his dog Patrasche in the city of Antwerp in Flanders (Belgium). While moderately known in the United Kingdom and the United States, and considered a children's classic in Japan that inspired several animated adaptations, the story is not well known in Flanders. Any Flemish attention to the story is usually tied to Japanese tourism.[1][2]
Antwerp cathedral
The ending of the novel and anime adaptations prominently feature the cathedral of Antwerp, which has several paintings by baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens which Nello would like to see. Combined with an existing Japanese trend of western christian-style weddings, this had led to the construction of at least three Japanese replicas of the cathedral serving as wedding venues. These are the Notre Dame Marinoa in Fukuoka, the Notre Dame Angelica in Osaka, and Notre Dame of Hiroshima in Hiroshima.[2]
