The Australian and New Zealand Amateur Press Association (ANZAPA) was founded in October 1968. Originally called APA-A, it was renamed ANZAPA in February 1969. It is a bi-monthly APA (Amateur Press Association) for primarily (but not exclusively) Australian and New Zealand science fiction fans. It requires a minimum of 6 self-written A4 pages from each participant every six months.[1]
Leigh Edmonds is credited with founding ANZAPA, although John Bangsund noted that Ron Clarke, Bernie Bernhouse and John Foyster were also involved in its initial planning.[2]
John Foyster, who organised the 7th Australian Science Fiction Convention in Melbourne at Easter, 1966, was later quoted regarding the plans for ANZAPA that ultimately came out of discussion at the convention:
When I heard that Ron Clarke had Uttered The Word, and that Leigh Edmonds and Bernie Bernhouse had taken him up on it enthusiastically, I began to wonder whether I had perhaps been shuffled into another universe, for I just didn't think that there were enough fans in Australia, able to produce regular fanzines.[2]
John Bangsund recalled in 1977:
For me, ANZAPA (or APA-A, as it was originally) was a turning point. By October 1968 I had published the first eighteen of ASFR's twenty issues, and I was feeling frustrated. ANZAPA launched me into the madcap, stimulating, utterly informal world of amateur publishing, and I can’t find words enough to thank Ron, Leigh, Bernie and John for providing me with this most delightful emotional and creative outlet and hobby.[2]
There have been many authors (and fanzines) involved in ANZAPA.[1]
