The Phone Tree was one way fans kept each other in touch with the very latest developments.
While phone trees could inform, motivate, and activate fans, they could also be sources of misinformation due to human error and transcription. A fan in 1996 said:
At the time I thought [...] the rumors of what J.C. had written outpaced the truth as people who hadn't seen the actual story were told about it by other angry people. In other words, a classic case of the distorted fandom phone tree at work.[1]
A 1982 Description
PURPOSE: To disperse information quickly, at low costs and over great distances.
TO USE: 1. In making your calls, you will immediately let the person you are calling know that it is a "Phone Tree" message.
2. You will state your information as quickly as possible.
3. Everyone should leave a pad and pencil close to the phone so that the message can be taken down as accurately as possible and then quickly passed on.
The numbers that you will call are included on a small card inside this month's issue. We will test out the phone tree as soon as we are sure that everyone has their numbers and we have something interesting enough to bother you. [2]
