Princess Sally Acorn is an anthropomorphic squirrel-chipmunk from the Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon and Archie Comics series. She is the leader of the Freedom Fighters and a love interest to Sonic.

Fandom

Sally is a popular character across Sonic's comic and cartoon sub-fandoms.

She is a very popular character to receive redesign fanarts, sometimes trying to make her look closer to the character designs from the games, others because of dislike of her redesign in the Post-Reboot Sonic comics, or just for fun.

Anti-Sally content and Controversies

There was some controversy with many Sonic fans during the run of the Archie Sonic comics about her character, with many disliking her either because they thought she was too perfect/a Mary Sue, because of a dislike of her design not fitting in with the rest of the female cast (often with comments about her being "a slut"), or because they liked other pairings with Sonic, like Sonamy or Sonmina and thought that she was "on the way" of said ships becoming canon. This can be seen in places like Livejournal or Deviantart, with many communities and fanart about people's dislike of her character [1] [2]

One issue of the comics in particular, nicknamed "The Slap" by fans because of a panel where she slaps Sonic in the face, was often used as proof of her being a bad person or a bad girlfriend to Sonic by people who disliked her, or as proof of an "anti Sally agenda" by the writers or artists by her supporters, [3] to the point where the artist of said issue, Jon Gray, was still receiving hate and criticisms about it years after the fact [4].

Nowadays, a lot of the controversies around Sally are seen as an example of both the toxicity of the Sonic fandom towards shipping, as well as an example of the misogyny that's often thrown at female characters (like the jokes about her being a "slut" because of her design). That being said, even during the controversy there were many groups making fanart and post against the shipping wars and backlash against Sally. [5]

Rally4Sally

Rally4Sally is an ongoing fan campaign that aims to bring Sally back into comics canon and possibly into the main game canon. The campaign formed in 2020 after Tangle and Whisper, characters from the IDW comics, were added to the official mobile games of Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. This marked the first time comic original characters had become playable in a Sonic game. While most celebrated the inclusion, some Freedom Fighters fans were upset that characters original to the Archie Comics run never gained a similar acknowledgement. Fans of Sally soon formed the #Rally4Sally campaign on twitter with additional #Sally4Dash and #Sally4SpeedBattle hashtags in hopes that she too could be added to the mobile game since it was now apparent comic characters were not off limits.

There has been some controversies surrounding the founders of the campaign[6] leading to two different hub accounts for the campaign, the original @Ral4Sal and the newer @all_4sally. In 2022 there was an effort to vote for Sally in a poll asking which characters fans would like to see next in First 4 Figures' line of Sonic statues.[7]

Ships

The canonical Sonally ship is Sally's most popular pairings, followed by Sallicole, which was supported by some writers of the comics like Ian Flynn, who admitted having put some hints of the ship in some of the Post-Reboot comics [8]. Another canon ship that was once common to see was Khanally, which pairs her up with Monkey Khan, and was often used as a Pair the Spares-type ship for people that shipped Sonic with someone else.
