Redbubble is a site where users can sell their art as objects. For instance, their art can be printed on a mug, sticker, or blanket. The customer selects which item they would like the art printed on, Redbubble creates the item, and then ships it to the customer. Many fan artists go through Redbubble to sell their artwork as it is easier than having to order or create the items and ship them by themselves. Many fan-related items, however, get taken down by the production companies who created the characters being represented.
Redbubble's Fan Art Program
In mid-2018, Redbubble introduced the Redbubble Fan Art program, a program designed to allow the selling of fan art as officially licensed works, approved by their partner companies. Fan artists could submit their works for approval, and once approved they could sell their design as usual. The approval process could take anywhere from a few days to a few months. [1]
However, alongside this Redbubble began removing vast amounts of unlicensed fannish content relating to its new partners, including swathes of Star Trek content for CBS. In addition, Redbubble also banned fanart from non-partner franchises.[2] However, even fan art licensed by Redbubble's partners was not safe - after a few months, CBS stopped taking submissions for their fan art program, effectively banning new Star Trek content from appearing on the site.[3]
