According to Wikipedia, "Nail polish (also known as nail varnish or nail enamel) is a lacquer that can be applied to the human fingernail or toenails to decorate and protect the nail plates." In a fannish context, nail polish is used to create fandom-themed nail art and some small-time nail polish makers use their fannish interests to inspire the nail polish they make.

Many creators eventually phase out older collections or release polishes as limited edition, and the nail polish that was sold will eventually be used up. Nail art has to be replaced or redone as it gets chipped or nails grow out. Consequently, this craft has a rather transient nature.

Some fans use nail polish and other nail products (such as vinyls and small charms) to create themed nail art.

Indie Nail Polish Makers

There are many small-time nail polish makers, often just a one-person operation. It's common for these creators to use their fannish interests in the creation of their nail polish. When indie polish makers release new nail polish, they typically do so in themed sets or as an individual polish that's part of a themed collection of many creators.

Fandom-Themed Creators

• Geekish Glitter Lacquer is a one-person indie nail product company. "I take inspiration from my interests in fandom and I love collaborating with other polish and fandom lovers."
• Literary Lacquer is a one-person indie nail polish shop. "Each polish is inspired by a literary reference and I attempt to evoke in color and texture the feel of the passage or work to me."

Themed Nail Polish Collections

• Lucky 13 Lacquer is a primarily one-person indie nail polish company which is not explicitly fandom themed, however most of their collections are inspired by a fannish interest. Some examples are Hero of Time, a Legend of Zelda collection; Knock em Dead(pool), inspired by Marvel's Deadpool; and Black-Hearted, each polish inspired by a villain from different movies.
• Moon Shine Mani is a one-person indie nail polish company. "Phoebe is excited to share polishes that she has been inspired to create based on her interests and passions." When she releases a new collection, she releases a swatch video where she explains the inspiration behind each polish. The inspirations behind collections range from the video game World of Warcraft to the Christmas episodes from the show The Office to the Disney movie Moana.
