Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of Jesus and his disciples in the best way possible: as a rock opera. The show premiered on Broadway in 1971 and has generally remained popular among theater fans ever since, inspiring new productions around the world and a few filmed versions.
Some especially popular productions of the show among fans include the 1973 film, a 1999 PBS Great Performances production, and a 2012 arena tour production starring Tim Minchin as Judas and Mel C as Mary Magdalene.
