Emulation refers to the act of emulating a video game console on a different device, usually a PC or a phone, to play games that wouldn't normally be playable on those devices.

Legality

While emulation itself is not illegal, distributing ROMs (the actual game files) online is.

Game Preservation

Video games that are only playable on a specific console that will at some point not be manufactured anymore, especially those that are digital only on online shops that will close one day, are at risk of disappearing forever. Many feel that emulation is a necessary step in preserving those games.
