The Buddie couch theory is a fan theory in the 9-1-1 fandom about the pairing of Evan "Buck" Buckley and Eddie Diaz. As of October 11 2024, the pairing is a fanon pairing, with the theory being that the metaphor of the couch suggests that they are an endgame pairing.

Canon

The theory was an in-canon metaphor in relation to Buck's on-screen relationships which had previously failed. In a scene with Buck and Eddie, Buck says that his last "two couches came with girlfriends" and explains that his reluctance to replace his couch since his last relationship ended comes from a fear of "picking the wrong couch, again". Later, a single person armchair is used to imply a satisfaction with remaining single for now, and a couch purchased for Buck by his parents, which is uncomfortable, leads to Buck going to Eddie's house and falling asleep on his couch.

Fandom

In fandom, couch theory has been adopted and expanded as a bigger metaphor for Buck's relationship with Eddie. Fans have explored various scenes at Buck and Eddie's house and the role the couches or lack of them play in the relationship between Buck and Eddie.

Its a metaphor for how buck feels in a relationship. Buck's couches have all come and gone with girlfriends. None of them being a good fit. He however states in season 6, that he is happy with just his chair, implying that he is comfortable with being single. His mom buys him a couch, but that still isn't a fit and ends up having a child birthed on it. Which means he isn't comfortable in his singleness as he thought. But then when he is struggling to sleep he goes over to eddies and falls asleep quickly on his couch. Meaning eddies' couch is a good fit for him.
