Better Living Through TrekSmut (BLTS) was begun as a way for readers to receive the fanfiction posts on alt.startrek.creative.erotica minus the spam. It was also a way for authors who wished to post without having to do so to the newsgroup.
- "The term "Treksmut" was coined by Ruth during the discussion for the creation of ASCE (alt.startrek.creative.erotica), when the name alt.startrek.creative.treksmut was put forward by her as a potential way to avoid the spam problem. While the name was decided against, the term caught on to the point where the mailing list was named "Better Living through Treksmut" or BLTs"[1]
In the beginning, the list leaned primarily toward slash fanfiction.
Stories were archived at R'Rain's.
1997, anneinchicago adopted the list and archive from Taffy, who had, by then, decided to move onto other things. anneinchicago changed the name from TrekSmut to TrekStories in order to be more inclusive and to steer the list away from the perceived idea it was for slash fanfiction only.
