In 2000, a fan named Dee asked fanfic writers about their thoughts about writing, specifically feedback.

The excerpts below are from that series of answers.

The original post:

I'd like to direct this questions to fanfic writers: What motivates you to write a story? Do you write a fic because you have a story to tell? Would you write a story for yourself? for an intended audience? Would you write a fic if you didn't think anyone else would read it? The reason I am asking these questions is because I am puzzled by the strong reactions to reader's comments. Does it really matter? Unless you are accused of something horrible, like plagiarism, do the negative/unfavourable comments really matter? I am posting this not incite a riot, I am genuinely interested in what motivates a fic writer to write. [1]

Some of Pita's Responses

For me, there's usually something rattling around in my brain that has to be let out. Whether it be a plot that has never been used in an episode, or something I didn't like about an episode, or a missing piece or scene, if it's in my head then it's going to get written.

As for writing for an audience, I don't. It's all about what's in my head, and if someday a Skinner/Frohike story pops in, then by golly I'm gonna write it. Even though I'm a shipper, I may even toss out a Scully/Doggett by the time the series is over. Who knows?

I love to write, and I love to tell stories. I don't have a huge fan base or anything, but I still keep crankin' out the stories. I have fun with it, so why stop? If one single person reads it and likes it, then it's worth all the effort. That's why I love the rec system at Ephemeral so much. If a story of mine gets one little rec, then my time was well spent.
