Issue 13: Excerpts from the Letters

First of all, I have to say that that Hollywood Reporter ad is the coolest thing I've ever seen written about B&B. I don't know who wrote that, but I know CBS was as impressed with it as I was! Wow, and comparing it to Star Trek in that way was terrific! Thanks for printing that - a perfect answer to all this low-ratings biz that's had me down. All we can do is keep writing. I've received a couple of replies from the sponsors — an encouraging one from "Wendy's"(!?!). ....A friend sent me a copy of the "Kelly & Co." show and I really enjoyed that. Jeanne, Linda, and Howard Gordon were great and those women in the audience were so funny. I laughed like an idiot 'til I was in tears. Love the Ron Perlman clips and Howard Gordon is a cutie.

Well, congratulations, CBS; in spite of all the letters written by fans to you, the show's sponsors and anyone else who would listen, you have (at least in your mind) killed the best show you've ever broadcast! But I have news, CBS: the fans aren't going to let you do it! Unless you wake up soon and see what you are really losing, Fox or another network is going to pick this show up and tell its creators "have at it" — give us the magic you've so successfully created to date! So, one big raspberry, CBS; you deserve bottom place in the ratings—forever!!!

On the morning of Saturday, May 20th, CBS ripped the rose-colored glasses from my eyes and shattered them, along with my heart, into a thousand pieces. I was walking out the door, on my way to work, when the early morning newspaper arrived. Impulsively, I flipped it open to the entertainment page and scanned it briefly as I had for the last several days, searching for some news on the fate of B&B. The lump in my throat was immediate. There it was in black and white: "CBS announces new fall line-up. Cult fave B&B has been CANCELLED...." Numbly, I turned and left for work, vainly fighting back the tears. Weather-wise, it was a gloomy morning. Gray and raining...and the analogy wasn't lost on me. In my car, I flipped on my cassette "Of Love & Hope". Laura's Theme was playing, a song I had grown to love. Only this morning that lovely melody sounded like a death knell...a swan song.

At work, people asked me what was wrong...why was I so depressed? I couldn't tell them. They wouldn't understand. At best, they had merely tolerated my enthusiasm for the show with an amused smile. I could hear their unspoken chastisement. I am an adult! How could I get this upset over a stupid television show?

Well, I am upset, dammit! I am disillusioned, angry, sad, bitter, and most of all disbelieving. Somehow, my mind still cannot accept that B&B has been cancelled. And if I'm this devastated, what about those directly involved with the show? It was obvious that B&B meant more to Ron, Linda, and all the others than a mere paycheck....

.... Well, Saturday morning really set in. And reality looked bleak.

By Sunday, I was still in shock. I kept repeating "I can't believe they cancelled B&B" over and over again like a mantra. But this time on my way to work, the sun was shining in all its glory, the early morning birds were singing cheerfully, and the sky was the most brilliant blue you could ever imagine. It was a perfect Spring morning. It was a HOPEFUL morning. It was a brand new day, full of promises. And at that moment I vowed that I would not let B&B die.

Issue 14: Excerpts from the Letters

Congratulations on winning the Fan-Q Award. I nominated and voted for "OUT...IN" and I am delighted to know that the majority of fans agree with me. You have been a constant example of level-headed thinking and fellowship for B&B fans. I have had telephone calls and letters from all over the country and I have phoned and written, and the response is always one of friendship and helpfulness as soon as we know the call about B&B. This is due to the tone you set from the first issue. I must also thank you for the printed photographs and for those you take the time and extra expense of inserting— your spirit of sharing is magnificent! I am writing to various entities on behalf of the program. Whatever the outcome, I believe the spirit of "Beauty and the Beast" will continue in some way.

I'm usually not a letter writer (I'm a voracious reader instead), but after seeing Friday's episode (the season finale, "The Rest is Silence"), I find myself compelled to put my thoughts in writing. I'm torn between two feelings — that of "this is the greatest show I've ever seen" and "how can they end it like this - until whenever".

I wonder if any of you, like I, have not been able to get enough of "The Trilogy" — especially the last two episodes. Each episode is beyond excellent, but "The Trilogy" as a whole is a masterpiece. The "Dark Symphony" played throughout, especially when accompanied by the chorus (heavenly!) is magnificent. Oh, my poor Vincent. I love him a thousand times more in this, his darkest night of the soul. That "Dark Side of Vincent" stalking him and Catherine in her apartment actually sent shivers up my spine and Catherine's last scream of "Vincent!" will haunt me all summer long.

I pray "retooling" does not mean this is where we end because I believe what Vincent stated in my favorite episode from this season, "Orphans", "...we are just beginning and we must go with courage and with care."

I am greatly saddened by the "partial cancellation" of our show, but also quite shocked. This second season was all the writers promised. I especially loved the second half. Not only did "Orphans" give us our first kiss, but Linda Hamilton gave a stunning performance as the grieving Catherine. I was also very touched by the ending..."I won't fall, Daddy. I won't fall." What other show give us such tenderness and truth of feeling?
