The Muppet Show is a TV variety show that aired from 1976 to 1981. The characters featured on the show are puppet characters called The Muppets.

The "core" Muppets characters include: Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, Statler and Waldorf, Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker, and the Electric Mayhem band.

"Muppets" are a collective name for the puppet characters created by Jim Henson, who first coined the term in 1955. In addition to the core "Muppets" (who were bought by the Walt Disney Company after Henson's death), there are also the Sesame Street characters, who belong to Sesame Workshop. Other related properties including Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and others belong to The Jim Henson Company.

Fandom

Sometimes the subject of crackfic, it appears on the list of requested fandoms for Yuletide. Muppet fanfic and fanart is also posted on the Muppet Central Forum message boards, on fanfiction.net and deviantArt. The Muppet fandom also overlaps with the Sesame Street fandom because the characters were also created Jim Henson and sometimes would do crossovers, before Henson's death and the rights of "The Muppet Show" characters went to Disney.

Crossovers

Sometimes the fanfic written is crossovers with other shows, for example Lovers and Dreamers by Alexia Eve (with Smallville), What Kind of Day Has It Been? by Victoria P (with Supernatural), or Take Atlantis by Siegeofangels (with Stargate Atlantis).

While with fanfic it is usually other characters are meeting the muppets in a traditional crossover, whereas with visual fanart fusions are more popular, in which either the other fandom's characters are cast as muppets, e.g. Muppet: Atlantis by Astrid (with SGA) or existing muppets cast as other fandom characters, e.g. Brokeback Muppet by Jay P. Fosgitt (with Brokeback Mountain as part of the Brokeback parody wave) or 300 Animal by Kennon9 (with 300).
