Jim Henson (1936-1990) was an American puppeteer, director, writer and producer best known for creating The Muppets He started on the show Sam and Friends and appeared with his characters on different shows. In 1969, he experienced his first breakthrough with the tremendously successful PBS educational children's program Sesame Street. The Muppets appeared for a time on Saturday Night Live, leading Henson to create a series with the kind of sophisticated humor he couldn't have on Sesame Street, resulting in the 1976 debut of The Muppet Show.
