Sunnydale After Dark is a Buffy/Spike fanfiction and fan art archive, originally founded by Chelle, Dusty, GillO, Megan, and Sandy S. These founding members wanted to create a community-oriented archive that encouraged creative freedom, fun, and an uplifting supportive atmosphere for all members. After some initial e-fiction setup from Susan, Dhoffryn joined the team as tech admin and upgraded many of the e-fiction features for more modern day usability. The site officially launched on June 24, 2022.

More than just a Spuffy fanfiction and art archive, Sunnydale After Dark celebrates its community in a variety of ways such as their “Scoobies of the Month” awards and spotlight interviews with these community-voted winners. Archive events occur every three months with new writing, art, and commenting challenges and awards. They also host an active Discord community with Buffy episode viewing parties, workshopping help for fic writers, community writing sprints, fanfiction reading discussions, and several recurring events like Work In Progress Wednesdays (organized by bookishy), Spuffy Silent Book Club (organized by Dynamite), and Sunday Slay Day conversations designed to get to know one another and celebrate every members’ victories big and small. Members at Sunnydale After Dark are always highly encouraged to offer feedback and to participate and lead in whatever Spuffy events they can dream up!

In one year’s time the archive accumulated: 1,108 members, 91 creators, 19,484 comments on 1,051 stories with a total of 17,899,853 words. As of February 2024, the site has 1736 members.

Megan chose to step down as an administrator in October 2022. GillO was removed in November 2022. GetItDone joined the team in May 2023. Sandy_S stepped down in September 2023. Grief Counseling became an administrator in October 2023. The site is currently operated by Chelle, Dusty, GetItDone, and Grief Counseling along with tech support from Dhoffryn.

An excerpt from the welcoming message on the site reads as follows:

Welcome to Sunnydale After Dark where our motto is fun, freedom, friendship, and Spuffy.

Our hope is to make Sunnydale After Dark a welcoming, respectful environment that supports its community and encourages creativity. We will be learning as we go as some of us are new to running an archive, and we hope to learn from our mistakes. To us, relationships in fandom are key above all else.

As such, we welcome readers, writers, artists, and betas - everyone who enjoys the Buffy and Spike pairing and playing with them. Feel free to share creativity in any form that works for you. We ask you to avoid harsh criticism of other creators, fans, and sites. We believe that the world is a better place with more Spuffy love and more creativity in it.

We are very grateful to D'Hoffryn for all the help on the technical side of things to make the site what it is so far and to Susan for getting us started. Thank you to Grief Counseling for the amazing BtVS-themed emojis and to the site beta testers for their diligent exploration of the site and for their suggestions that helped make the site sparkle and shine.
