Canon

Minerva McGonagall and Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody served together in the Order of the Phoenix during the Second Wizarding War. They likely also served together, albeit indirectly, during the First Wizarding War when Alastor was a member of the Order and Minerva was a Ministry spy. They were supposed to be professors at Hogwarts together during the 1994-5 school year, but in reality, Alastor was actually Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise, while the real Alastor Moody was trapped in Crouch’s trunk. Minerva was horrified when she came upon Crouch-as-Moody bouncing Draco Malfoy around as a transfigured ferret, so it can be inferred that Minerva did not expect this behavior from her colleague. It is unknown whether or not Minerva had any doubts about Crouch-as-Moody’s identity before the reveal. Minerva was among the three people who rescued Harry and Alastor from Crouch. It is unknown how Minerva reacted to the news of Alastor’s death, but she was likely saddened by it, as were the rest of the Order members.

Fandom

Given the dearth of canon information on either Minerva McGonagall or Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody outside of post-publication interviews and JKR’s extras on Pottermore, fans of this rare pairing enjoy a lot of creative freedom and flexibility. Minerva and Alastor are often assumed to be close in age, so fanworks sometimes portray them as students at Hogwarts or with Minerva as a young professor and Alastor as one of her older students. It is also common to see fanworks where Minerva and Alastor used to be in a relationship, broke up sometime in the past, and are forced to face their feelings again when Alastor comes to teach at Hogwarts, with the expected angst when Minerva eventually realizes that Crouch had been impersonating Alastor the entire school year.
