At the end of the series Ray Kowalski and Fraser run off together into the Canadian wilds, the jumping point of numerous due South stories. In this fic, Ray Kowalski returns to Chicago after not having found the words to share his feelings for Fraser and is partnered with one Ray Vecchio. The two find themselves bonding over dissolved relationships and consciously ignoring lost ones (that guy in red? he's easy to fall in love with), and then, wonder of wonders, Kowalski finds himself being wooed by Vecchio. This story was written for DS_Match 2007's Team Romance, and the author does a great job of pulling out all the stops in a way that's believable and (yeah) so very romantic. Eventually the compass needle of the two Rays points due north, and they decide to attempt to include Fraser in their lives. Can they make it work? (dun dun DUN!) I usually try to rec stories that *feel* epic, simply because 40k+ word stories are tough to produce and hard to come by, and this story, imo, fits the bill. I'm a fan of Ray Kowalski, the consummate guy with his heart on his sleeve/pursuer, having the tables turned on him. This Vecchio is still trying to come down from years of undercover work, and we get some excellent character development on all fronts because of it. The inclusion of Fraser could come across, in other instances, as a throwaway, but Brynn slowly works the character and the transition into the narrative and the lives of Kowalski and Vecchio. And, oh, I'm mentioned the romance, right? I happy sighed, squeed, and applauded. Sometimes simultaneously. [1]
When I first got into due South fandom, I figured out in about three seconds I was going to 'ship Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio. I love the way they compliment each other, I love the way they work together, I love everything about this threesome. And I have probably, no lie, read this fic at *least* six thousand times; I've seriously read it so many times, I think I could recite it to you. ;) There are laugh-out-loud lines, hot hot HOT sex, a sense of shared history that makes me flail and flap my hands around in glee a lot, and the characters are just *pitch perfect*. Also, the ending makes me tear up every single time I read it. Enjoy! [2]
