Jolyne Cujoh (空条 徐倫 Kūjō Jorīn) is the sixth "JoJo" of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series and the protagonist of the series' sixth part, Stone Ocean. She is the daughter of an unnamed American woman and Jotaro Kujo, the protagonist of Stardust Crusaders.

Background

Canon

Jolyne Cujoh (空条 徐倫 Kūjō Jorīn) is the protagonist of the sixth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stone Ocean, and the sixth JoJo of the series. She is the daughter of an American woman and Jotaro Kujo, the protagonist of Stardust Crusaders.

Framed for a DUI murder, Jolyne is sent to Green Dolphin Street Prison, where she investigates and battles DIO's most trusted disciple, Father Enrico Pucci. Initially an ordinary girl, Jolyne quickly awakens her string-based Stand, Stone Free, during her time in jail.[1]

Development

Araki created Jolyne with the hopes of "making up" for his previous (and in his eyes, failed) attempt at a female protagonist. Aside from offering an interesting contrast to most shounen comics, he thinks she is a "real woman" sorely lacking in the medium. The role reversal between her and her father was devised for her character to go beyond the typical archetypes found in Japanese fiction.[2][3]

According to Hideto Azuma, Araki's editor at the time of Stone Ocean, he had requested that Jolyne's character be a man as *Weekly Shounen Jump* was a magazine for boys. However, Araki insisted on Jolyne's gender, saying that the fact that readers wouldn't accept a female lead was exactly the reason Jolyne had to be a woman.[4]

Fandom

Reception and Popularity

In Japan, Stone Ocean is possibly the least popular Part of JJBA, and it may be similarly divisive—though to a lesser extent—in the United States. Some attribute this to narrow-minded backlash against the series' first female protagonist and the storyline's departure from shounen conventions, while others claim that Stone Ocean goes full throttle into "bizarre" elements while failing to cohesively incorporate them into a satisfying "adventure".[5]

However, while Part 6 may be contested, the protagonist Jolyne Cujoh herself is generally liked by the fandom. Fans often appreciate her tough talk, fierce determination, crude antics, and creative combat skills. However, she is the most amoral of the Jojos.

According to JoJosapiens, a fan survey conducted with primarily Japanese respondents:[6][7][8][9]

  • Jolyne vs Pucci was ranked the tenth best fight in the series, while Jolyne vs Viviano Westwood was ranked the 20th.
  • Jolyne's death was ranked ninth among character deaths that made fans cry.
  • Jolyne was the first among characters whose hairstyle fans wanted to try.

Fanon and Tropes

Jolyne's surname, Cujoh, is identical in kanji and pronunciation to her father's surname, Kujo, yet they have often been romanized with different spellings. Some fans attribute this difference to a real-life localization discrepancy, while some gravitate to an in-universe explanation that Jolyne intentionally changed the spelling of her surname in order to distance herself from her estranged father.

Fan works often focus on child!Jolyne (AKA "Smolyne"), who appeared in the official video game, spending quality time with her family.

JJBA fans often wish that characters from one part would appear in others, especially for the sake of the Joestars having a "family reunion". Regarding Jolyne specifically, fanworks often portray Diamond Is Unbreakable AUs in which her seven-year-old self accompanies her father and great-grandfather to the town of Morioh, meets her newfound granduncle and his posse of friends, and subsequently bonds with her family. [10] In other AUs, her extended family—often including her great-great granduncle Giorno Giovanna—show up during the events of Stone Ocean to help her fight against her enemies and save her father. 456 Trio content typically features Jolyne bonding with Josuke and Giorno.

In JotaKak fan works, Jolyne may be Jotaro's daughter from a previous relationship, a biologically unrelated child adopted by Jotaro and Kakyoin, or supernaturally created through some sort of Stand powers. Even non-shippers joke that Kakyoin is Jolyne's biological mother due to the resemblance between Hierophant Green and Stone Free.

Shipping

Within the fandom, Jolyne's arguably most popular relationship is not a romantic relationship, but her familial relationship with her father. Many found their relationship in Stone Ocean to be emotionally moving, and fans often enjoy portraying the two being affectionate and having father-daughter fun.

As far as the Western fanbase goes, Jolyne Cujoh/Ermes Costello is likely her most popular romantic ship, despite Jolyne being canonically heterosexual. Narciso Anasui/Jolyne Cujoh is more controversial, but also has its supporters.
