Joseph "JoJo" Joestar (ジョセフ・ジョースター Josefu Jōsutā) is a major character in the manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Joseph is the main protagonist of the series' second part, Battle Tendency, as the grandson of Phantom Blood’s protagonist, Jonathan Joestar. He returns as a main character in Stardust Crusaders, set 50 years later, in which he has acquired the Stand Hermit Purple (隠者の紫, Hāmitto Pāpuru). He returns again as a supporting character in Diamond Is Unbreakable, where he meets his teenage son Higashikata Josuke and is shown to be physically and mentally weaker now due to old age and not keeping up his hamon training.

Reception and popularity

As of 30 May 2018, Joseph is tied with Kakyoin Noriaki as the second most frequently appearing character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fan fiction on FanFiction.Net (FFN).[1] As of 6 June 2021, he is the the sixth most frequently tagged character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure works on Archive of Our Own (AO3).[2]

In one Charapedia poll, Japanese fans ranked Stardust Crusader Joseph as 18th best coolest "ojisan" (older male) character, while his beard ranked sixth in another.[3][4] In the Newtype anime awards for 2013, Joseph was voted as fourth best male character.[5]

According to JoJosapiens, an official fan survey conducted in 2018, three of fans' top 20 fights in the series involved Joseph:[6]

  • Joseph Joestar vs. Wamuu ranked #6
  • Joseph Joestar & Jotaro Kujo vs. Daniel J. D'Arby ranked #13
  • Joseph Joestar vs. Kars ranked #15

In 2018, infamous British-American programmer and businessman John McAfee changed his Twitter profile picture to feature the older Joseph Joestar as part of an outreach effort to Millennials.[7] As of 2021, his profile picture has remained so, even after McAfee's death.

Fanon and tropes

Compared to his mother Lisa Lisa and maternal grandfather Straizo, both fellow Hamon users whose powers have greatly extended their youth, Joseph has aged similarly to an average human. Many fans speculate that Joseph has intentionally allowed his Hamon powers to deteriorate so that he may age with the rest of his family and not outlive his wife, Suzi Q.

Some fans enjoy the headcanon that Joseph's Stand, Hermit Purple, is the reincarnation of his late friend, Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli.[8] This is similar to the much more popular fan theory that Jotaro's Star Platinum is the reincarnation of Jonathan Joestar, returning to the living world to settle business with DIO.

Many fans are disappointed in Joseph for cheating on his wife with a much younger woman and not being involved in Josuke's life. It is a common headcanon that Joseph was under the influence of alcohol at the time, and his actions would've been out-of-character otherwise. Some fans believe that Joseph isn't nearly as feeble minded as he presents himself to be in Diamond Is Unbreakable, and is putting on an act in hopes that his family's pity would dampen their rage toward him for being an adulterer and absent father.
