Walker is a 2021 TV series airing on the CW. It is a reboot of the 1993-2001 series Walker, Texas Ranger, and stars Jared Padalecki as the titular Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger.
Fandom
As Padalecki had already accumulated widespread fannish attention and adoration from his starring role in Supernatural, Walker had a built-in fanbase from the start. The first work on Archive of Our Own in this fandom was posted in September of 2019, long before filming on the series had began in late 2020[1].
Reception
Thus far, Walker's reception among critics has been mixed, and the case is no different in fandom. This was made clear even as the pilot episode was airing. Some fans loved the pilot; others derided it. Detractors in fandom took jabs at Padalecki's acting (as evidenced by the "musty wail" meme[2]) and took serious issue with the subject matter and political subtext of the show. Some fans even created the hashtag "#WalkAwayTexasRanger"[3] and started a fundraiser[4] for RAICES (a legal aid nonprofit focused on helping immigrants) in protest.
