Tiercel is a Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan story by Vermilion Flame. It has two sequels, Migratory Passage and Folloqing Icars.

Summary: Obi-Wan is sent to attend his mandatory classes in riding and animal husbandry. He is befriended by Master Animal Healer Qui-Gon Jinn. After Obi-Wan helps the healer through a serious crisis, Qui-Gon offers to repay him by teaching him to ride. He also introduces him to falconry. Soon the friendship develops into something more, and Obi-Wan is confronted with a difficult decision.

Recs and Reviews

I'll be honest: looking back at the thing this morning, there are some aspects of it that tend, generally speaking, to drive me bats. In particular, it feels a little epithet-heavy. But two things are true. First, I'm awfully sensitive to epithets ("the younger man", "the other man", "the healer", "his lover" -- gah), possibly more so than other people; and secondly, there's something about this story that makes me not mind. The setup is a basic AU -- Obi-Wan has to complete a course in animal husbandry taught by the non-Jedi Master Healer Qui-Gon Jinn -- and the writing is quite good, but I think what really gets me is the characterization. Qui-Gon, in particular, is a complex, multi-faceted man, and his love for his work is apparent in everything he does, the way Flame has written him. Plus, this fic has one of the two best first kisses in the fandom. :-)[1]

Master Animal Healer is a wonderful calling for Qui-Gon in this excellent AU series. He and Obi-Wan meet when the Padawan takes classes in animal husbandry on the planet Grathos.

Obi-Wan thinks the classes are a waste of his remaining time as an apprentice and wouldn't be there at all if they weren't mandatory.

Then he meets Qui-Gon and sparks fly. Both are fascinated by each other's career, and we watch them become good friends. Their relationship deepens when Obi-Wan saves the Healer from being consumed by the Dark Side of the Force.

Qui-Gon gives Obi-Wan private lessons to show his gratitude, which become an idyllic path to intimacy for them.

If you like romantic horseback rides and picnics beside beautiful lakes, this is the story for you.

A true delight! [2]
