Excerpts

Excerpts from the publisher:

"Daniel swallowed. He could deal with this. "Jack, Jack, it's alright. It's just me, Daniel." He was trying to calm himself as much as the other man. He had to do something...if he couldn't touch, then all he could do was offer the comfort of words.
Still shaking, Jack smothered a moan, rolled onto his back and tried to focus on him. "Daniel?" he questioned faintly.
"Yeah, it's me." Daniel tried to be reassuring but his voice shook; mentally he gave himself a good hard shake, cleared his throat and tried again. "It's okay, just calm down."
Jack closed his eyes.
"Let me see." This time when Daniel cautiously reached out and very gently touched him on the shoulder, Jack flinched, but obediently stretched out on his back. Daniel had a good idea how much it must have hurt. As carefully as he could, Daniel ran a hand over each rib, every joint and limb checking for broken bones. Jack's only response as he endured the exam was a useless pounding of the floor by a fist.
"Danny? I didn't tell them a thing..." His speech was slurred; Daniel supposed it could be because of the cut on his lip.
"I know that, Jack," he answered very softly. "Nothing's broken." Not broken from what he could tell, but there were lots of deep bruises. Lots.
"They di'na ask..."
-------------------
The honking of a horn, interrupted Daniel's thoughts. It was time he left. It was time to get back to reality.
Jack held the door. But as he stood on the steps, Jack asked, "Got everything?"
Daniel turned back. He'd promised himself he wasn't, but Jack sounded so lost. "Everything I need, and nothing worthwhile..." He said it too softly for Jack to hear anything but the agreement in his tone.
Jack nodded, but said nothing in reply.
From the back seat of the Taxi, he couldn't resist one more glance at Jack before they drove off. He must be tired, Jack looked as if he wanted to call him back. And then he was too far away to see anything for sure. Daniel was sure he just saw the things he wanted to see. So that was that."
