The Proposal is a romantic-comedy film starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.
Canon
The film focuses on Margaret Tate, a Canadian immigrant that works as an executive editor in chief of a book publishing company. She learns that she is about to be deported back to Canada, in defense, she states a lie to her bosses that she and her assistant Andrew Paxton are getting married and will "fix the problem". Although he hates his boss, Andrew agrees after she promises to make him an editor and looks over his manifest.
Thus they go home to meet his family, for his grandmother's (portrayed by Betty White) birthday. Andrew's family then convinces Andrew & Margaret to get married that weekend at the house. There they fall for each other. Right before they get married, Margaret can't go through with it because she really loves Andrew and doesn't want to get him into trouble with the law. With help from his family, Andrew realizes she loves him and goes to her; stating it in front of the whole office.
Fandom
The fandom is fairly small for fanworks but it is generally agreed to be one of the best romantic comedies from 2009. The chemistry between Andrew & Margaret (aka Reynolds & Bullock) is also frequently praised; the pairing could be considered the fandom's OTP.
Both Archive of Our Own and FanFiction.net have less then 100 works on the site, although works are still added yearly since the film's release. Tumblr often reblogs gif-spams.
The Proposal fusion - a type of alternate universe for another fandom - appears in various fandoms from bandom/rpf to The Avengers Movieverse (AO3's tag).
