Suits started airing on June 23, 2011 on USA Network, although according to Wikipedia it first appeared on USA's development slate in April 2010 under the title A Legal Mind.

Canon Overview

Suits follows the characters Mike Ross (played by Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey Specter (played by Gabriel Macht). Harvey is a high-powered lawyer at the firm Pearson Hardman who only looks out for himself. Just having been promoted to senior partner, he is told he must hire an associate. Mike is a college drop-out with an eidetic memory that allows him to memorise texts, including legal texts. With this knowledge he impresses Harvey at a job interview despite the fact that he isn't a candidate, is running from the police with a briefcase full of pot at the time, and did not attend Harvard. So Harvey hires Mike (and sends him to Harvard for the weekend so he can better fake having attended).

Other characters of note include the following: Jessica Pearson (played by Gina Torres), who is the Pearson in Pearson & Hardman and was Harvey's mentor when he first joined; Louis Litt (played by Rick Hoffman), a junior partner in the firm who oversees all the associates and often has conflicts with Harvey over everything from business politics to Mike; and Rachel Zane (played by Meghan Markle), a researcher at the law firm who originally helps Mike out of pity, though friendship is growing between the two characters.

Recurring roles include Mike's grandmother, who raised Mike after his parents died when he was a child and is now in a facility catering to her medical needs due to her age; Harvey's secretary Donna (played Sarah Rafferty); and two of Mike's friends, a pot dealer named Trevor (played by Tom Lipinski) and Trevor's girlfriend, Jenny Griffith (played by Vanessa Ray).

Common Tropes in Fanworks

Many fics explore the power differential between Mike and Harvey, with Harvey being Mike's boss and Mike being canonically referred to as Harvey's puppy in at least one episode.

Other common tropes include Mike getting Harvey to admit he really cares, Mike's former BFF Trevor acting like a true friend or conversely a worse friend than in canon, Mike's submissive nature not just for Harvey but various other characters, backstory about Harvey and Donna's friendship, backstory about Harvey and Jessica's friendship, and about a thousand flavors of woobie!Mike.

Some authors like to borrow characters from other TV shows that take place in NYC to act as Harvey's clients. Most notably Mozzie from White Collar sometimes shows up in fanfic (often under his alias, Mr. Havisham).
