Issue 1

Side by Side 1 was published in September/October 2001. (Web Archive Link), Archived version

  • Abandoned by kira-nerys. Kirk tries to deal with the realization that Spock is really gone.
  • A Place for Me by Morgan LeFey. Kirk attempts to come to terms with changes in his friend (following the events described in Barbara Hambly’s pro-fic novel Ishmael).
  • Can't Seduce Him by Saavant. McCoy bets Spock he can’t seduce Kirk. Just a silly little thing in response to Kira-nerys’s first-line challenge.
  • A Violent Past by Saavant. Spock’s third pon farr is approaching, and he cannot forgive himself for things he has previously done in his Time.
  • In Check on AO3 by K'Sal. Kirk finds it necessary to deploy his logic. This story is an answer to Kira's kiss challenge. Spock would argue that it fulfills both requirements; if anyone would like to split hairs with the Vulcan - be my guest. Later published in Cyberdreams #2.
  • Kisses Sweeter Than Wine by EmGee. “First Kiss on a Part of the Body Other Than the Lips” Challenge.
  • Points of Interest by Saavant. Spock has sexy ears. Kirk is obsessed. Answer to kira-nerys’s First Kiss challenge (Robin’s variation on it, actually) and her “You’re not supposed to want to make love to your first officer” challenge.

[Abandoned] Very affecting, and well done. A damn sight more sensitively and realistically handled than the end of the movie. And that it is something ordinary that gets to Kirk... very good. Like a time-delayed shock, realistic denial... well, you made me hurt all over again for Kirk. Please keep writing and posting!![1]

[A Violent Past] This was the first slash fic I ever read, a many years ago and on a site that's probably long gone. It, hm, stuck in my mind. I'm so glad to come across it again.[2]

Issue 2

Side by Side 2 was published in November/December 2001. (Web Archive Link), Archived version

  • Sunlight by Jenna Hilary Sinclair. Some interaction between three friends. (previously posted on the KirkLovesSpockFic list)
  • Alternate Words by Liz Ellington. Spock shows Kirk that he knows how to talk dirty ...
  • If You Move by Saavant. Challenge reply to kira-nerys' challenge "Start a story with the words "If you move, I'll come" and have Spock be the one to say it."
  • Holding Hands by Saavant. Vulcan sexual customs have some compatibility issues with human ones. Reply to kira-nerys' "Weird Vulcan Sex challenge." "No violence, but someone gets a small injury. Involves a set of Vulcan genitals that differ from the big green double-ridged norm."
  • Move by EmGee. Kirk is moved by Spock's love-making. Reply to kira-nerys' "If you move, I'll Come" challenge
  • On the Brink by Jenna Hilary Sinclair. Kirk has taken that first big step: he's asked Spock if he would be interested in an intimate relationship. But Spock's not even sure that he can react in a human manner when it comes to sexuality. He needs some time to think about it.
  • Spock's Journal, Part 1 story and pictures by T'Guess. Takes place after "Amok Time" - Spock discovers that the blood fever isn't over, and that he wants Kirk for his mate, but Kirk can't accept this.
  • Touch on AO3 by J S Cavalcante. An answer to the "He's gay, Jim" challenge on ASCEM.

[On the Brink]: 4/5. I have yet to find a story by Sinclair that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. This was fun and simple. Personally, I felt that Spock was very trans in this one, though I know that probably wasn't intended.[3]

[Spock's Journal] I like your writing, it's clear and well-flowing and there are many hot parts in the story. I also love the double twist with T'Pring ... and the happy ending works well.

On the *hmmm* critical side from me: there are some choices of words that fit Jungle Kitty's K/S cliché list perfectly and make me think "ah well, true K/S" (as opposed to normal slash). But I am sure this will produce lots of very happy K/S readers, so no need to change that *g*.

Thanks for writing and sharing :)[4]

[Spock's Journal] This was gorgeous. I got misty eyed at Spock's journal entries and I LOVE a happy ending.[5]

  • The Visit by T'Lin. Spock has returned to Vulcan to take a wife. Depressed and alone at his cabin on Alpha Centauri, Kirk reflects on his future without the Enterprise, or Spock. The sudden, and unexpected arrival of Spock and his betrothed give Kirk hope that the future may not be as bleak as he feared.
  • In My Arms by Misty Waters. What if Kirk had gone to Spock's quarters instead of Yeoman Rand's in the episode "Enemy Within"?
  • Fair Seducer by Hypatia Kosh. When Spock can't decide whether to take him or leave him, Kirk decides to up the incentive.

[Runzani]: 4/5. This was pretty good. There were a handful of typos, but other than that it was fairly well written. Not much to say beyond that.[6]

[Runzani]: Kirk and Spock have to pretend to be married for a mission. This isnt the usual farcical treatment of the trope, though; the aliens (who are awesome) have picked up on a bond that they're already aware of but have been denying. Kirk's freak-out over this felt very real; he's perturbed, but not excessively angsty, which felt very IC. I also love the post-TMP Spock who's comfortable with his feelings for Kirk.[7]

[Too Much of a Good Thing] Loved this one the first time I saw it, and love it again. Kirk can be such a prick when he's horny; add super-powers and you have the prick of the universe. Spock is brilliant, timing the extended orgasm. Thanks for putting it up here, it's a very funny premise and one I'm glad you took on.[8]

[And When the Bond Breaks] I guess I'm OK with reboot Trek, it's better than no Trek a'tall, but it seems like the currently desired audience demographics requires hyperactive, unrestrained teenagers to be running Starfleet.

But THIS, this was MY Star Trek! Mirror, mirror with a vengeance. Angst, action, duty, close camaraderie & sacrifice- all the Star Trek virtues I fell in love with when I was a kid, and the added bonus of K/S, that I found to my wicked delight in college. (The first time a movie plot tore my heart apart, I was truly angry & grief-stricken when they killed Spock, writers/producers have managed to do it three more times in the many decades since.)*G*

I could hear their voices saying your lines & I could see the Enterprise reacting to the crisis, walls fading in & out like smoke and the alarm klaxon wailing. H*ll, I could even see McCoy pouring that generous slug of whiskey & hear his sarcastic, won't-admit-I'm-worried drawl as he chided Spock, and as he tried not to see Kirk & Spock making out. This was so, so good as classic Trek, thank you!

The love between Jim Kirk & Spock shining brightly through any danger, any darkness; "...and I saw no shadow of another parting between us..."

I've dallied with many fandoms since, but this one was my first and will always hold a special place in my fannish heart. Thank you for sharing it & letting me play there again for a time.[9]

[The Concept of Love and T'hy'la] Over a quiet chess game, Spock explains to his captain the Vulcan concept of T'hy'la and its differences and resemblances to Human love. Soft and sweet with lovely undercurrents and slowly building UST.[10]

[His Darkest Hour] I'm always a little nervous trying to choose the first fic I'll read in a new fandom. What if it's so terrible that it puts me off the pairing forever? This time, I couldn't have chosen better. It was beautiful and perfect, absolutely lovely. Thank you.[11]

[His Darkest Hour] What’s a LOVELY piece to read. Well-written and well-paced, and extremely sweet. I love protective Spock, and his adoration for Jim was absolutely spot-on. Thank you for sharing this beauty <3.[12]

[Out of Ashes] A story by Rae Trail that I've never read before is such a treat; thank you so much for uploading this![13]

[The Good Son] Honestly the way you depict Aphrodite and Eros, they could have been discussing any suitably frustrating couple and it’d be hilarious.[14]

[Younger Times] Ah! Ah! This is beautiful, I was floored by the innocence and the gentleness! I have no adequate words for this, except thank you. Thank you for sharing this![15]

[Younger Times] Beautiful story! Very nice insights into phobias. You showed an interesting new aspect of Kirk.[16]

[Turbo Tale]: A fic from the point of view of a very meddling turbolift. No, really. And just as awesome as it sounds. (Also implied Scotty/turbolift?) [17]

[Do I Look Fat to You?] Yes, I can see why desert creatures wouldn't want to store too much subcutaneous fat. Like it![18]

[Do I Look Fat to You?] Oh wow... tummy sex... I am in heaven! Love your stories, which is why I'm randomly going on a review rampage.[18]

[Do I Look Fat to You?] Oh, YEAH! Farfalla, you've done it again! Great story, and certainly makes me treasure the older Kirk every bit as much as the young one. Hot!!!! Yes, indeedy! And BWAHAHAHAHA! I just LOVE the end! Yeah, sending this to both lists (that I'm on) because if anyone missed this, I want them to go back and read it. Standing ovation![19]
