The Rosemary Sutcliff Fanwork Exchange or Sutcliff Swap is an exchange for fanfiction and fan art based on the historical fiction of Rosemary Sutcliff. It was founded in 2012 by Carmarthen and Isis.

The Sutcliff Swap is an anonymous, reciprocal exchange. It is administered as a collection on Archive of Our Own, with journals on Dreamwidth and Livejournal. All Sutcliff works are eligible, including novels and short stories; adaptations of the original writings, including the 2011 film, The Eagle, are not eligible.[1] An additional restriction is that works must be set in the source era:

This exchange is also for stories set during the canonical era of the source--which means AU from canon events is fine, but please save the modern and science fiction AUs for other venues.[1]

The minimum contribution is 1000 words of a completed story or one completed artwork.[1]

2012

The inaugural exchange opened in August 2012, and was co-moderated by Carmarthen and Isis. The 17 participants created 25 fanworks: 6 artworks and 19 stories. The most popular of the nine fandoms represented was The Lantern Bearers with seven works; other fandoms were Frontier Wolf (4), The Mark of the Horse Lord (4), Sword at Sunset (4), The Silver Branch (3), The Eagle of the Ninth (2), Blood Feud, The Shining Company and Warrior Scarlet (each with a single work).[2][3] Many of these had previously had no or very few online fanworks.

Three stories told how Flavia came to be married to one of the Saxons who abducted her in The Lantern Bearers.

2013

The 2013 exchange was again co-moderated by Carmarthen and Isis, and opened on 10 June.[4] Unlike the previous year there was no author secrecy period, due to the small size of the exchange. The 17 participants created 22 works, 20 stories & 2 artworks, in nine fandoms. The most popular fandoms were The Eagle of the Ninth (7 works) & Frontier Wolf (5); other fandoms represented were Blood Feud, Outcast & The Shining Company, each with two works, and Dawn Wind, The Lantern Bearers, The Mark of the Horse Lord & The Silver Branch, each with a single work.

2014

Riventhorn and Vingtieme took over as moderators for the 2014 exchange. Sign ups occurred in April and the collection opened on 9 June.[5] The 15 participants created 20 works in nine fandoms: 4 artworks & 16 stories. The most popular fandoms were The Silver Branch & Frontier Wolf with five works apiece; also represented were Blood Feud, The Eagle of the Ninth & Outcast, each with two works, as well as Dawn Wind, The Mark of the Horse Lord, Sword Song & The Truce of the Games, with one apiece.

The most popular character was Honoria from The Silver Branch, who starred in four works.

2015

The 2015 round was moderated by Isis and Riventhorn. Sign ups occurred in April, and the collection opened on 8 June.[6] The 11 participants created 13 works in eight fandoms: one artwork & 12 stories. The most popular fandom was The Eagle of the Ninth, with three works; Frontier Wolf, Outcast & The Rider of the White Horse each had two works; as well as Dawn Wind, Knight's Fee, The Mark of the Horse Lord & The Silver Branch, each with a single work.

Unlike in some previous years, no one character or fandom predominated. The Rider of the White Horse had no earlier works archived on AO3.

2016

The 2016 round was again moderated by Isis and Riventhorn. Sign ups occurred in April, and the collection opened on 11 June.[7] The eight participants created nine works in seven fandoms: two artworks & seven stories. Frontier Wolf and Knight's Fee each had two works, and there was one work from Dawn Wind, "The Fugitives", The Lantern Bearers, Outcast and Warrior Scarlet. "The Fugitives" had no earlier works archived on AO3.
