Perspective is a Jack/Daniel story by Brenda Antrim.

Reactions and Reviews

Brenda Antrim has written a very different "Meridian fix it" story. Alongside the universe we know, she has developed an alternate universe where Daniel is widowed before he has any time to get to know Sha're, yet still stays on Abydos. We see this AU Daniel's life over the next six years, at the same times as we observe our universe's SG-1 deal with their Daniel's ascension to a higher plane of existence. We also see our non-corporal Daniel's frustration at his inability to help his old friends.

Despite the differences, AU Daniel is a recognisable, but subtly altered version of ascended Daniel. His life is full of hardship and sorrow, even more so than our Daniel, and Brenda highlights the differences cleverly. AU Daniel has a sexual relationship with Skaara, being cheerfully seduced by the young man in a way that is obviously totally acceptable to the Abydonians. When the Goa'uld come to Abydos, he leaves with Teal'c in yet another clever rewriting of the original story. AU Teal'c is also a very familiar character. His relationship with AU Daniel takes time and trust to develop, and it feels all the more real because of it.

The writing is tight and succinct, although occasionally the unfolding AU story suffers for lack of detail. We get fascinating glimpses into familiar events viewed from very different perspectives, and I often wanted to explore these further. Despite this, the author manages to introduce us to an array of familiar characters, such as Selmac and Gairwyn, in very unfamiliar circumstances.

The conclusion of the piece is effective: melancholy, yet also positive. The breadth of the story is impressive, and the way the author uses her original and AU characters is very clever. Even as a confirmed Jack/Daniel lover I managed to find this story rewarding. It didn't produce what I wanted, but it gave me a very skilfully plotted and crafted alternative. [1]
