many names in history, none of them are ours is a Steve/Tony MCU story by aubkae. It was posted as in 8 parts between June and September 2012.

Summary: Steve's not sure if he'll ever understand Tony Stark, but it's good, living here. If he still wakes up sometimes convinced this was all a dream, well, it's better than it was before, and that's something, isn't it? The Avengers live in a world that both glorifies and fears them, but they know each other now behind the scenes.

Recs and Reviews

A good post-movie story dealing with the various problems that the Avengers face as they become a family, and as Steve and Tony in particular grow closer together. The relationship flows very naturally, and while this is very Steve/Tony centric, the rest of the team gets plenty of screen time.[1]

Things and people change, and the Avengers try and make themselves a legal entity with UN and SHIELD support. Steve/Tony, past Pepper/Tony, Thor/Jane, NC-17.[2]

Moments which stick with me - the initial post-traumatic nightmare awakenings for both Tony and Steve; the Insomniacs Club (and the poster); Steve vs bigotry, part the first (the press conference); Tony and Pepper's breakup, and the way that the Avengers club together as Tony's support group; the Giant Frogs (because they had so much fun with it); the two of them finally getting together; their misunderstandings and arguments (they're both strong-willed, they're going to argue); and of course, Darcy, Natasha and Clint dealing with the mailbox ("bad", "good", "so bad it's funny" - sounds like a good sorting system). Or, in a shorter version: the whole fic.[3]

This is, by far, one of THE best Tony & Steve fanfics that I have ever had the sublime pleasure of reading. I just. I don't even know how to describe how fantastic this was for me. I mean, I see a lot of fics from Tony's perspective, but hardly any with Steve's, and I absolutely loved it. It was all so in-character, and while accomplishing just that if a fic this long is an impressive feat in and of itself, but then the way you portrayed their mutual PTSD, how horribly accurate it was just made me want to cry.[4]

I saw this on pinboard and started to read. Within minutes I had that rush that I only get when reading the very best things, the rush of "in character skilled hands perfect writing beautiful build of emotion ahhhhhhhhhh my babies my whole world reduces down to this story's reality" that happens rarely. Every single thing in this fic is perfect. You conception of Steve and Tony -- not to mention the more peripheral characters -- is so spot on and nuanced. I love that, that neither of them are perfect by a long shot, yet their fundamental goodness comes through so strongly. You made me believe that both of them are in love with the other, and the slow aching build of want was masterful and had me breathless.[5]
