Reactions and Reviews

This story reminds me of a favorite of mine, Touching by Monica Voile in Counterpoint 1. That's good! Here Spock learns lessons about touching as he goes through life. The first tiny scene takes place in his crib where he has just broken a silver baby rattle given to him by his human grandfather. Even though it's only two paragraphs long, I found this approach ingenious and original.

Humans see touching quite a bit differently than Vulcans do, though, and Spock's lessons on touching are expanded considerably when James T. Kirk takes command of the Enterprise. During a wrestling match in which Spock is spread-eagled over Kirk, there's this nice little exchange.

"Your techniques sometimes resemble a...back-alley fight"

Kirk laughed and delicately touched Spock's jaw with his fist. "I win though."

Spock leaned into the gentle touch, unaware of his actions.

Isn't it interesting how sometimes just one little three line section will capture our attention and make a story really memorable? That's how it is with me, and I really like the way Kirk touches Spock's jaw in this particular position. Melting on the floor time!

Spock decides that's he's becoming too human with all this touching ("Spock should have been—but wasn't— shocked at how many of their activities involved nudity or semi-nudity.") and goes off to Gol. But of course he comes back, and at the first opportunity Kirk begins a course of instruction on even more intimate touching that Spock enthusiastically follows. Touching is good! [1]
