Fan Comments

[2012]: I never got into the major, major slash fandoms. But one day, I thought, there's gotta be a Beatles LJ. That's gotta be happening somewhere. And there was. It was called "John Heart Paul." That was the name of the LJ. Now, when I was a little kid — a little kid, younger than ten — my sister and I, my older sister and I were just playing a game like "Name your favorite whatever" and I think one thing she said was "Name your favorite love story." And I said, "John Lennon and Paul McCartney." And she said, "What do you mean by that?" And I said, "I think, of all of the people in the 20th century that loved each other the most, they loved each other the most." And I think what I was kind of implying was, it was because they broke each other's hearts. That's the proof. You can see it because it ended. But I was just really convinced by that. When I was a little kid, I said, Yep, no question. That's—. If I have to think about who loved each other the most, it was them. When I found John Heart Paul, I couldn't believe I never slashed them. That's the name of the fandom — it's called John Heart Paul, duh. What? I even called it, when I was like nine. Of course that's the fandom! (laughs) [2]

[2015]: The rumors that John and Paul had a sexual relationship are as old as The Beatles. JohnHeartPaul is — can only be — an expression of a permanent feature of the greater fandom. I believe that JHP, and John and Paul slash, is related to changes in our larger society; just as “Paul Is Dead” is a direct outgrowth of the assassination/conspiracy culture of the 60s and 70s.[3]

[2018]: I was obsessed, so obsessed, SO obsessed with the Beatles when I was young. Like, hyper-fixated. I felt like such a weirdo and I roped my friends in, but I was kinda on another level of obsession.

I wasn’t part of an online fan community or anything, because I didn’t have internet access. I was in foster care, and my group homes didn’t allow us online ALL. Like, occasionally I found a way to sneak on, but for the most part.. nothing.

When I was on a home visit and my parents weren’t looking, I made an LJ community for people who think John and Paul were meant2be. I called it johnheartpaul.

Thennnn I was caught on the computer and didn’t really get to participate in it

I checked back recently and the community had over 1000 members, and was active for a pretty long time. I missed the entire run of the community. I think I popped in once or twice in the very beginning, but I was never really part of the community.

Maybe it was okay that I was alone in my obsession, it really made it seem more “my own”. But, hey, don’t take fandoms for granted. Community is cool.[4]
