Jason Todd/Kara Zor-El is a het DC Comics pairing of Jason Todd (Robin II/Red Hood) and Kara Zor-El (Supergirl).

Canon background

The basis of this pairing is mainly formed on these characters' interactions in Supergirl #35 (2014) written by Tony Bedard and Batman/Superman Annual #1 (2014) written by Greg Pak.

They're also playable opponents in the 2017 fighting video game Injustice 2, though they have no unique voice lines for their interactions.

Fandom

The Kara/Jason pairing is a rarepair within the DC Comics fandom, although it has appeared in other DC fandoms besides the comics such as Supergirl (TV series) (with Jason fancasted since he has yet to appear in the Arrowverse) and Injustice fandoms. The pairing seems to mainly appear on Tumblr and Archive of Our Own, a few fanvids were posted to YouTube.

They both have a lot of grief and rage over having their lives violently ripped away from them, and then they're forced to find a new place in a world that doesn't seem to fit them. Both are in the shadow of Superman and Batman.

I think Kara would benefit connecting to someone who can validate her feelings and her desire to stand up for herself, rather than being constantly pressured to reject her feelings and behave like a happy wholesome girl scout. While Jason is accountable to someone, so he has to be an actual person instead of just fixating on his crusade. Also ngl I agree it's awesome for Supergirl to be the badass tank while Red Hood is the fragile guy.

I think they'd ultimately go their separate ways, but still.[1]

Ages

Due to an inconsistent timeline,[note 1] some fans have expressed concern that this pair's ambiguous age difference could be problematic. The visual appearances of the characters further confuse fans; Kara's appearance has ranged from angelic ingenue to "cheesecake" adult, while Jason's appearance often seems aged to a point beyond his own older brother or even adoptive father. When some DC fans discussed the idea of Jason/Kara in a 2014 ComicVine thread, many of them squicked at the presumed age difference[2] (according to this fan discussion, Kara is speculated to be 17 and Jason is speculated to be in his 20s or 30s).

Notes

  1. ^ In a 1959 publication, Kara Zor-El was first introduced as someone in an age range close to Barbara Gordon (then Batgirl) and Dick Grayson (then Robin). In a 1983 publication, Jason Todd was first introduced as a pre-teen much younger than former congresswoman Barbara and college-aged Dick. Kara was killed off and erased from existence in the 1985-1986 Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline; Kara was later rebooted and reintroduced as a teenage girl in a 2004 storyline, while Jason had already passed his 18th birthday and possibly aged up an unspecified number of years to legal adulthood.
In the new and confusing timeline established by the New 52 reboot in 2011, Kara was reintroduced as a 16-year-old girl preparing for the rites of Kryptonian adulthood; Jason is presumably younger than his 21-year-old older brother, Dick. In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021-2022), Kara observes her 21st birthday. Then Batman/Superman: World's Finest (2023)—set in the past—depicts her as a teenager going on a date with Dick during his Robin days.
