it's not what you're sure of (it's what you don't know) is a Steve/Danny story by somehowunbroken. It was written for the 2011 five0bang, a Hawaii Five-0 Big Bang.[1]

Summary: Art thief Steve McGarrett and his team come up against FBI Special Agent Danny Williams, and things spin wildly out of control from there.

Sian1359 and theblackrose16 created photo art for the story.

Recs and Revies

A total blast of the best kind: fun, sexy, exciting, heart-tugging. The team is fabulous, and of course Steve would have something so organized and *prepared* and tight-knit, and have his code of honor (and also have that airy insouciance he shows so often here completely downpat). Steve and Danny together are a delight as they move from that first meeting to their road trip to Paradise (so to speak :-)). I also love the way it ends (and starts up again). Total, total blast. Thank you![2]

asdjfhlkasjdf I'm so glad they're going to be together! I got to the end of chapter six and was worried stupid that that was it! sajdfhlkashdf oh boys, my heart, my heart. (And mad kudos on working in so many characters from the show - I love how seamlessly you put it all together in a different form. So well done.)[3]

Oh, I really loved this--especially how much of the Team gets to be involved (I love every single one of them!), and when what Steve and Danny have together abruptly shifts into something else, that moment when Danny pulls him into the room and is kissing him fiercely, his hands cradling Steve's cheeks, and everything changes, asd;flaksdjfa;sdflasdkfj my heart!![4]

Awesome! Loved Steve's crew--especially badass!Kamekona and Mamo, who reprises his kindly grandfather role from canon, but with a criminal bent. I liked the twists you gave to the characters--Steve is both more laidback and more tightly organized here, and also less prone to violence as a criminal than in canon, which is fascinating. Danny is less of a hothead and more controlled here than in canon, which fits his character in your story here better. Together, they were incediary! Your sex scenes were smokin' and the emotions came through very vividly.[5]

Wow, wonderful, addictive, epic story! Love the plot, kept me guessing, worried and hoping throughout. Masterful characterizations and the way you built the team and the support system with Toast, Mary, Kamekona and Mamo was perfection. Loved how they each had a role and worked together to execute the job whether it be a heist or saving a life. Special props for making Rachel an FBI agent and Danny's boss - nice to see them as friends and supportive of one another but still with snark. Enjoyed the chase and the dance with Danny and Steve, ducking and bobbing trying to outdo the other during questioning: the attraction and competitiveness lurking underneath then breaking out when they are thrown together. So in character for Steve to help Danny after realizing what had been set in motion. Their cross country adventure, the flirting, the teasing and finally Danny making the move were a joy to read, so much fun. I was rooting for them. Terrific job of weaving Wo Fat, the Noshimuris and Hesse into the story, especially using Wo Fat as the "inside" man at the FBI. Very cool to see Danny and Steve's team put the clues together and Danny coming up with the name. The plan, the take down and the ending were all superb. Great to see Danny take Wo Fat down and yet be upset with what he had to do. Liked Steve understanding and taking care of him. Loved the ending, so perfect that Steve was on the job when he got the call from Danny and Danny sensing what was going on. Yay for happy endings and long, wonderful, can't stop reading stories! Thank you so much![6]

Just finished this terrific story and wanted to say "thanks!" for sharing. There are so many fun elements to the story, but for me it always comes down to characterization and the folks in this were great. Yes, I loved Danny and Steve in all their AU glory, but it was nice to see the rest of the crew too. Thank you for making all of them very reality check normal, especially for making Grace a normal (not sickeningly sweet) child and for not making Rachel an iron clad bitch just so they could move the story along. You took the high road on that and it's very much appreciated.

The story was nicely detailed, not too much or too little and moved forward at a very pleasant pace. I also thought you did a fine job on the m/m parts, keeping things real but not so detailed that it became the theme of the story. I'm not sure there could ever be too much McDanno loving going on, that's pretty much impossible for me, but you did a great job of balancing things out here so the story felt really even. It's a minor thing but I thought Steve was very himself and very appealing when he rather took care of Danny right after the violence near the end. That's the kind of man I picture him as being and I loved the way you wrote them in that horrible aftermath.

Of course this was fun all through the story but to top it off we got a happy ending and that is nothing but awesome. I'm sure that Danny and Steve will have logistic complications with their respective careers, but there's no doubt that these two will work things out. It's very warm and fuzzy to think that Danny will have a ton of goodwill towards the crew that helped him during his time of need. He'll be sure to take Grace for shave ice and who knows how much he'll be able to shift their files into a more benign area of inspection? I feel sure Danny is a man that pays his debts and especially since he'll be on hand for team bonding and cookouts.

Great fun, a lovely story and, woo-hoo a big bang sized word count.[7]

super cool! i really like that this wasn't so much about steve being an art thief and danny being an fbi, and by that, i mean it wasn't about chasing steve through europe and steve letting danny catch up to him. instead it was this awesome conflict story with steve's cool team and associates and a lovely romance that they didn't waste any time with. i like the first option, but what i really wanted was the feel of our regular characters and setting but still an au. lol i'm curious as to how their relationship can go, but clearly it's going relatively supportive and rachel the fbi boss doesn't seem to have too many concerns. love it!!!![8]

This is one of the best H50 AUs I've ever seen. I love Steve's team–spoilers; Kono is as adorably dangerous as ever–and the little details make it great.[9]
