It's a Small World is a charity zine themed around Disney amusment parks and the Kingdom Hearts games.

About

The zine was first announced on June 27, 2020, as a zine dedicated to Kingdom Hearts and Disney parks[1]. Interest checks for the zine began on June 28th and closed on July 15th[2]. Illustrators and writers could apply as contributors from August 1st to August 31st[3]. A reported total of 180 applications had been submitted[4]. Results were sent out on September 19, 2020[5].

Preorders were open from June 18 to July 16, 2021, with the following pricing tiers[6]:

  • Wishes ($15 USD) - Digital Zine, Icons, Digital Wallpaper
  • Dreams ($25 USD) - Physical Zine
  • Once Upon a Time ($35 USD) - Physical Zine, Die-cut Stickers, Holographic Print, Postcard Print
  • Fantasy in the Sky ($50 USD) - Physical Zine, Die-cut Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Holographic Print, Postcard Print, Charms, Buttons, Lanyard
  • Happily ever After ($65 USD, Limited) - Physical Zine, Die-cut Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Holographic Print, Postcard Print, Charms, Buttons, Lanyard, Standee, Enamel Pin

Physical orders began shipping out on February 2, 2022[7]. All physical orders were shipped out by February 18th[8]. Digital bundles were sent out on March 4, 2022[9].

Leftover sales opened on April 30, 2022, until May 14th[10]. All items were sold separately, and no bundles except for the digital bundle would be available.

The project has yet to release a donation statement.

Moderator Removal Incident

On October 26, 2020, Gummi Shipping, a Twitter account for aggregating and curating Kingdom Hearts fan projects, posted an open letter on Valk, a mod on It's a Small World as well as Kingdom Hearts Rarepairs Re:Mind[11]. In response to inquiries from other fans about Valk's political views, the posted letter contained a collection of evidence that the mod was a supporter of then United States president Donald Trump. Anticipating the potential fallout, the account also urged fans to not harass the mod. As of this documentation, the Gummi Shipping account and its open letter has been deleted, so the following is taken from secondhand acccounts of the incident.

The open letter detailed multiple instances of Valk indicating her political alignment. In addition to explicit remarks in support of Donald Trump, One particular instance included a voice chat conversation where Valk made insensitive comments over voice chat about the fan interpretation that Riku was gay, ranging from irritation with queer interpretation of the game's characters to disparaging comments about SoRiku and by extension, its fans[12].

Many fans perceived these comments to have come from a place of homophobia, especially since SoRiku had long been maligned for reasons that lined up to Valk's comments. This interpretation was further supported by Valk's further comments confirming her poliitcal alignment in the week leading up to the United States 2020 presidential elections. To further exacerbate the situation, Valk reportedly fought against the accusations and attempted to discredit the users involved in writing the letter, going so far as to access or another Twitter user's private account to collect material. Outrage at Valk's remarks and retaliatory behavior also extended to It's a Small World, sparking concerns about supporting a zine that has a Trump supporter on their mod team.

On October 27, 2020, the zine's social media account announced that Valk had stepped down from the project because their political beliefs did not align with the rest of the team, and that all remaining mods apologized for not being aware of the severity of Valk's behavior[13]. Reportedly at this time, Valk also withdrew from Kingdom Hearts Rarepairs Re:Mind.
