McGonagall/Hooch is the pairing of Harry Potter characters Minerva McGonagall and Madam Hooch. In early Harry Potter fandom, it was one of the most prominent femslash pairings.

History

The origins of the 'ship can be traced to the Harry Potter for GrownUps mailing list in mid-2000. Madam Hooch's Broom Closet wrote in early 2003 that McGonagall/Hooch was "an old favorite, from the early days of the HP for Grownups mailing list."[1]

The history of the pairing on HPfGU is addressed twice on the list's Fantastic Posts & Where to Find Them website. Penny Linsenmayer writes in the "Potential Romantic Pairings" summary that "[McGonagall/Hooch] is the pet romance pairing of one of our members. This member has argued very persuasively for this pairing, despite the lack of canon evidence."[2] Neil Ward additionally states when discussing potential McGonagall pairings in the "Minerva McGonagall" summary: "With a little lateral thinking, Catlady decided that McGonagall is a lesbian who has been with the same partner for years and suggested Madam Hooch as her sporty partner: they call each other Minnie and Hoochie."[3]

Catlady first proposed the pairing on the HPfGU list in July 2000, shortly before the publication of Goblet of Fire.[4]

At FictionAlley Park, the "HMS Kittyhawk" SCUSA thread and the McGonagall/Hooch ...cruisin'... thread were both started in September 2002. The hms_kittyhawk community on LiveJournal was founded in March 2004.

Appeal

Tropes & Conventions

  • "Xiomara" was a popular (perhaps the preferred) first name for Hooch in McG/H fanfiction; "Mara" was a common nickname. See Madam Hooch: Rolanda vs. Xiomara, and this 2006 poll at hms_kittyhawk
  • Hooch as a retired professional Quidditch player (canon per her real-life Chocolate Frog card); Hooch and McGonagall having a shared passion for Quidditch (or a rivalry over the teams they support)
