Hifumi Yamada is a student from Dangan Ronpa. He is one of the least liked and least talked about characters. Yamada debuted in the first game of the series, Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, though did not survive the killing game.
Despite his unpopularity, he has many fans who believe he is a misunderstood character. Redesigns of him are common. It's likely that his main "gag" is funnier to Japanese audiences and falls flat to western audiences.

Fanfic Creator or Dōjin Author?
When Trigger Happy Havoc was localized in 2014, Yamada's talent proved problematic. Very few in the west knew about Doujinshi and the culture surrounding them. While many Japanese fans understood that a particularly skilled Doujinka could feasibly sell over ten-thousand copies of their works at school festivals and conventions, localizers knew western fans would not, generally speaking. The talent was localized as Fanfic Creator, though perhaps Zine Author would be the closer western-equivalent. However, the idea that fanfics could be sold in that high of quantity, even in zine form, is unheard of and infeasible, and the labeling confused many regarding the already unpopular character.
In fanworks which focus on Yamada, western fans may say he's a Dōjin Author. Before Trigger Happy Havoc's official localization, he was known as a Dōjin Author in western Dangan Ronpa fan-circles due to orenronen's Let's Play.
