Good Girls is an NBC show and it has a small fandom dedicated to it. It is set in the same universe as Superstore and Mindy Project.

Canon

"The series follows three suburban Detroit mothers, two of whom are sisters, who are having a hard time trying to make ends meet. They are tired of having everything taken away from them so they decide to pull off an unlikely heist by robbing a supermarket, only to discover that they're in for more than they bargained. Their successful robbery attracts the attention of the store manager after he recognizes one of the women, but for a different reason altogether tied to the money."[1]

Main Characters

  • Beth Boland, a mother of four and housewife whose car salesman husband cheated on her
  • Ruby Hill, Beth and Annie's best friend, a waitress who is struggling to pay for her daughter Sara's kidney disease treatments
  • Annie Marks, Beth's younger sister, a single mother who works at the supermarket as a cashier and whose ex is suing her for full custody of their daughter
  • Dean Boland, Beth's cheating car salesman husband who lost all their money
  • Stan Hill, Ruby's cop husband
  • Rio, a criminal who has a money laundering business
  • Sara Hill, Ruby's and Stan's daughter who has kidney disease
  • Sadie Marks, Annie's and Gregg's genderqueer child

Fandom

Good Girls fandom is mainly located on Tumblr, YouTube and Archive of Our Own. Fans on Tumblr initially organized around the tag Good Girls, but as of December 12, 2018, that tag was no longer available.[2] This is more than likely due to the Tumblr purge of NSFW content. Fans resorted to tagging their content as NBC Good Girls.

The fandom is mainly dedicated to main characters: Beth Boland, Ruby Hill, Annie Marks and Rio. The noncanon pairing Beth/Rio (Brio) is one of the major pairings in the fandom and the one that produces the most fanfiction, discussion and gifsets.[3] The Beth/Rio pairing seems to be liked or at least supported by TPTB.[4][5][6][7][8] The canon Ruby/Stan is also cherished in the fandom. The other canon pairing of Beth and her husband, Dean, appears in fanfiction, but not favorable due to his actions on the show (Infidelity, losing the family's money, faking cancer) and the character is generally disliked nearly as much as the other girls enemies, Boomer (attempted rape of Annie, his general attitude towards women but especially Annie, Beth & Ruby) and Mary Pat (single parent who blackmails Annie, Beth & Ruby).

Fanfiction first appeared on Archive of Our Own on March 25, 2018.[9]

Fanvideos are mainly posted to YouTube, the first one was posted on March 25, 2018.[10]

Common Tropes & Fanon

  • Smut is a large factor in the fanfiction works, usually due to the UST between Beth and Rio. Angst and Fluff is less common
  • Before it was revealed in S1 finale of the lack of tattoos on Rio's arms, writers would have more tattoos besides his neck one this includes is arms which was generally hidden by his hoodies.
  • Beth being called Red or having red hair, while she mostly has blonde in the show, there are times where it has red tint to it causing it to look more like strawberry blonde hair. It might also be because Christina Hendricks, the actress behind Beth, generally has red hair in RL.
  • Episode Tags, Missing Scenes and fix-its, especially for the first season's finale but various other episodes also have works focused on them.
    • Post Season: Season 1 finale ended on a cliffhanger and a lot of the works start from there.
  • Fake/Pretend Relationship usually between Beth/Rio that leads to something more
  • Age Difference between Beth & Rio, which fanon usually gives them about 10 year difference

"Let’s talk about Beth and Rio (Brio?): If you watch the show, you’ll have noticed Hendricks and Manny Montana as bad boy Rio heating up the screen on a regular basis. Bans explained that was unintentional. “We always have the full trajectory planned out,” Bans said. “Then we have happy accidents happen. With the characters of Beth and Rio – that chemistry happened. We weren’t planning that at all. Unexpected things occur and sometimes you scrap the things you thought were so attached to.

The head of the network read what you wrote about the Beth and Rio scene. ”"
