Gnomon is a Les Misérables Enjolras/Grantaire fanfic written by luchia. It was written in response to a prompt, Archived on 24 September 2019 on the Making Hugo Spin kink meme.
The work was pulled to publish on March 29th, 2015.
Author's Summary
“This is what happens when you’re an international beacon of righteous fury and justice for the oppressed masses,” Grantaire says. “Everyone forgets you kill people for a living.”
(OR: Enjolras is the leader of the 'militant extremist organization' ABC, and he and his human shadow Grantaire are somewhere in Russia doing shit that Grantaire can’t even try to explain - Enjolras is acting strange and something Grantaire can't name has gone horribly wrong and christ he should not be sober right now.)

Gnomon is the first in a series of six works titled stupid terrorist boys. The other five works are still up on AO3 and the last work, Nocturlabe is abandoned.

Hot off the presses, this WIP was completed today. This fic is amazing and intense and I cannot recommend it highly enough. In this Modern AU, Enjolras is a militant terrorist who also works as an assassin. Grantaire is his human shadow who follows him everywhere and is in love with him. Everything is thrown for a loop when suddenly Enjolras decides to change their relationship. The characterization in this is wonderful, as is the plot and the dialogue and the worldbuilding and all of it. This fic does some really fascinating things with the modern update and the E/R relationship. I love this fic so much. Just all of it. ♥ [1]
Terrorist!AU. Because wow. The Amis are militant extremists and Enjolras and Grantaire travel around Europe killing corrupt people. There’s so much sexual tension at the beginning and then extremely unhealthy codependency that actually works? For E/R, I mean. This is a different, more frightening side to Enjolras’ passion that we don’t see a lot of in E/R, but is also offset by his extreme dorkiness when it comes to his relationship with Grantaire. Frightening and endearing all at once.[2]
This is so good. So incredibly good. This is the one where Enjolras is a world-famous terrorist and Grantaire is his shadow and something very bad is happening. Heed the warnings-this fic is very violent and very horrifying in places. Also contains a character’s PTSD being triggered in a frightening way. But read it if you can! There is a lot of Enjolras/Grantaire out there, but this one understands what they mean to each other in the context of the revolution the best, and just why they are so important to each other. Also, despite her not being a main character, this has my favorite Cosette I’ve ever seen in fic. (Do not try to interact with the author though. Don’t ask.) [3]
I adore Gnomon because it hits all my kinks + is one of the very few modern AUs that has Enjolras actually being a violent revolutionary.[5]
This is the dark fic to end all dark fics. It is so, so, so well written, and it is so emotional - no half-assing, full drama. Originally this series contained ‘Gnomon’ as its first installment. ‘Gnomon’ is now a novel (an actual novel that you can actually buy, which is amazing!), so to my knowledge it is not available online as a fic anymore. BUT! you can read everything else on AO3: prequels and sequels and in-betweens… and let me tell you, it is worth it. This is one of those fics that you remember.[6]
