Genji Shimada, also known as Genji is a playable character from Overwatch, a first-person shooter game by .

Canon

Genji is the younger brother of Hanzo Shimada, and used to be the heir to the Shimada Clan along with Hanzo. However he did not want to follow their father's way of life, and Hanzo tried to kill him. Genji survived with the help of Angela Ziegler, but was later made into a cyborg by Overwatch to assist its black ops division, Blackwatch..

Emotionally distressed and seeking guidance, Genji found Tekhartha Zenyatta, who helped him recover and accept his new self. He became a part of the newly remade Overwatch.

In the animated short Dragons, Genji reveals himself to Hanzo, who is at their home in Hanamura mourning his death. Hanzo is shocked and refuses to accept that Genji is still alive.

Voice lines that play when Genji and Mercy are on Hanamura during Valentine's Day (February 14) and White Day (March 14) have them discussing shared chocolates.[1]

Fanon

A common fan trope is to portray Genji and Hanzo interacting normally despite canon events. Modern (fully) human versions of Genji tend to give him green hair, since he has green hair in one of his younger in-game skins.

Another common trope is to portray his green spirit dragon as a noodle, dog or cat.[2]

Alternate universe fanfiction and fanart are frequently inspired by Genji's in-game skins. These include an Oni skin, and a desert nomad skin, as well as skins portraying him as a young adult.

During the Overwatch Anniversary Event, Genji received a new skin called 'Sentai' (based off the Japanese tv show Super Sentai). This became the focus of many AU ideas where Genji is a superhero, often with his brother Hanzo as 'Cyberninja' (another skin in the anniversary event).

Common tropes include:

  • Genji having a bubble butt[3]
  • Genji being Jesse McCree's right hand man as he tries to flirt with Hanzo Shimada
  • Genji being uncharacteristically immature

Shipping

The juggernaut ship involving Genji is Genji/Zenyatta, generally called 'Genyatta'. This ship is popular because Zenyatta gave Genji guidance through a very low point in his life, and made Genji accept his cyborg self.

Another popular ship is Genji/Mercy, because she saved his life and there is evidence that they keep in contact.[4] There is some fandom wank over this ship, however, because some fans see it as a power imbalance between doctor and patient. In addition, it is the second-largest ship involving Angela Ziegler, besides Pharah/Mercy, which has resulted in a conflict approaching a Ship War. Genji/Mercy is the most popular het ship in Overwatch.[5]

A smaller ship is Genji/McCree. This ship is somewhat popular but is dwarfed by its counterpart McCree/Hanzo.

Fanfiction

  • Oni and Okashi by Choriarty. Zenyatta is only a simple wizard with a penchant for potions and occasionally making sweets. However; even with his magic, it's difficult to keep a tower in good condition all by himself. Sometimes he asks other beings for help with chores and errands with the help of his summoning circle. That is, until something else comes through it.
