Genji/Mercy is a het pairing in the Overwatch fandom. Also known as Gency, it features characters Genji Shimada and Angela Ziegler, also known as Mercy.
Canon
Genji Shimada is the younger brother of Hanzo Shimada. He was nearly killed by him but was saved from death by Mercy, but was later made into a cyborg by Overwatch to assist its black ops division, Blackwatch. [1]
In the Christmas comic Reflections, Genji is shown writing a letter. Later on, a panel is shown of Mercy reading a letter. It is not shown whether they are the same letter, but Mercy is shown holding the same kind of feather that Genji was writing with.
In early January 2017, fans found voice lines in the PTR (Public Test Region) between Genji and Mercy where they gave each other chocolates.[2] These lines were implemented and one half (where Mercy gives chocolate to Genji) played on February 14 (Valentine's Day) and the other half (Genji giving chocolate to Mercy) played on March 14 (White Day) in 2017 and 2018, and only play when Genji and Mercy are on the same team on the Hanamura map.
Further updates included references to tanzaku (part of the Tanabata holiday), and a number of conversational voice lines in the "Storm Rising" event in April of 2019 (dated 6 years before the "present day" of the Overwatch game). These include Mercy telling Genji to take her to dinner (which he agrees to), and observations by Tracer that Genji and Mercy are getting along well, which he attributes to her keeping late hours.
Fandom
Gency is a popular ship due to the characters' shared history. Their friendly in-game interactions also fuel peoples' love of the ship. However, Gency is also controversial, as other ships containing Genji and Mercy, including Genji/Zenyatta and Pharah/Mercy are very popular, and some fans dislike the notion of the two characters being straight.
Another reason some people do not approve of the ship is because Genji and Mercy formerly had a doctor-patient relationship. The conflict of interest is sometimes enough to make some feel that the ship is inappropriate.
Despite this, there are many fans who ship Genji/Mercy, and the ship has a moderate following on Archive of Our Own and a larger one on Tumblr. It is the most popular het ship in Overwatch.[3]
