Ethan is a Pokémon Trainer and a playable character from Pokémon Gold and Silver. He is popular with fans, though less so than one of his Female counterparts, Lyra. He also makes an appearance in Pokémon Masters.

Jimmy, his PokéAni counterpart, and Gold, his Pokéspe counterpart, are distinct enough characters that they won't be discussed here.

While Gold is his name in Pokéspe and in Pokémon Gold's manual, his name in Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver is canonically Ethan, giving him one after 10 years of being previously unnamed. Fanworks made before 2009 likely give him this name, and many continue to prefer this name over Ethan even in the 2020s. Having the Pokéspe version of a character's name be more popular than the Gameverse's is a rarity in Pokémon fandom and notable.

The Pokémon he is most associated with are Togepi, Typhlosion, Marill and Lugia.

Relationships

  • Ethan is most commonly paired up with Silver, forming HunterShipping[1], which is M/M, aka Boys' Love. In Japanese, this is most often called シルヒビ, meaning Silver attacks and Ethan receives in the coupling. The opposite is also commonly shipped and is written as ヒビシル. It may also be called ライヒビ (meaning Rival x Hibiki, in that order).
    • In Japanese, ライ主♂, which refers to any Male!Protagonist x Rival pairing except PokéAni, includes both ships under its umbrella.
  • Ethan is also shipped with Lyra, forming HeartSoulShipping, which is F/M, aka NL. In Japanese, this is called ヒビコト, meaning Ethan attacks and Lyra receives in the coupling.
  • Ethan is also shipped with Red, forming HeartGoldShipping, which is M/M, aka Boys' Love. In Japanese, this is most often called [x].
  • Ethan is also shipped with Lance, forming JohtoChampionShipping, which is M/M, aka Boys' Love. In Japanese, this is most often called ワタヒビ, meaning Lance attacks and Ethan receives in the coupling. The opposite is also commonly shipped and is written as ヒビワタ.
  • Ethan is also shipped with Morty, forming ParanormalShipping, which is M/M, aka Boys' Love. In Japanese, this is most often called マツヒビ, meaning Morty attacks and Ethan receives in the coupling.
  • Together, Ethan, Silver, Kris and Lyra make up the Johto Games Trio.
    • In Japanese, their gen (combi in Japanese) relationship is called 城都トリオ, meaning Johto Trio. This is not to be confused with ジョウトリオ, which is this same group but for Pokéspe. ジョウト組 may also be used, though that just translates as Johto Group, so it includes any large group of Johto characters.

Popular Tropes & Fanon

Ethan is also commonly portrayed as fun-loving and bright to contrast more with Silver in friendship & M/M fic. This is inspired by his portrayal in Pokémon manga, as seen in Pokemon Masters' own interpretation of the character for that game. He is often called Gold, his manga counterpart.
