Doug/Roger is a slash pairing from the Nickelodeon series Doug.

Canon

Doug Funnie is a middle school student who moves to the town of Bluffington in the series premire, where he first meets school bully Roger Klotz. Roger targets Doug immediately after the latter steps on a packet of ketchup that squirts the former's shoes, after which he and his gang haze the newcomer by sending him on a snipe hunt for the fictional Neematoad.

The first series sets Roger up as just a bully who constantly harasses Doug and goes out of his way to humiliate him. However, later seasons would soften Roger up just a bit and develop their relationship. While the two continued to butt heads, they'd have several instances of working together or one sticking up for the other; most notably the episode where Doug tries to protect Roger from a bigger bully, and Roger ends up saving Doug when the bully changes targets.

The final episode had the two sharing an emotional moment as they discussed their anxiety over graduating middle school. The scene marked just how much their relationship had changed since they first met.

When Disney took over the show and continued with the gang in junior high, Doug and Roger remained frienemies, though Roger could be a lot meaner for kicks and more emphasis was placed on Doug's growing relationship with his crush Patti Mayonnaise.

Fandom

The fandom exploded somewhere in the 2000s, with fans looking at the series through a new lens and realizing a lot of Roger's behavior could be interpreted as him having a big gay crush on Doug. TVTropes even compiled a list of "Ho Yay" examples from various episodes[1], such as Roger organizing a party to celebrate Doug having lived in Bluffington for one year or trying to sit next to him on a ferris wheel. One episode even has Roger leaving his beloved cat Stinky in Doug's care, showing that he trusts him more than he does even his own friends.

Fan works about the ship tend to be set during the Nickelodeon era. Part of this is due to the Disney series being somewhat less popular among fans, and part of this could be due to the aforementioned increased focus on Doug's growing romance with Patti.

Tropes associated with the ship

  • Roger being a tsundere
  • Enemies to Lovers
  • Fics based on episodes with heavy Doug and Roger interaction
