The Bujold Ficathon or Bujold Fest is an English-language fanfiction challenge in the Lois McMaster Bujold fandom, including the Vorkosigan, Chalion & Sharing Knife series. Founded in 2006 by Altariel,[1] it was the first fanworks challenge in the fandom. Some rounds included fan art. Works are posted in summer.

The 2006 & 2007 rounds used a gift-exchange format, while later rounds switched to a prompt-claiming fest format. The early rounds ran entirely on Lois McMaster Bujold Fanfic Community (bujold_fic) livejournal. From 2010, works were posted to both livejournal & Archive of Our Own collections, and from 2011 prompting moved to used AO3. Administration remained via bujold_fic until 2015, when the ficathon moved entirely to AO3.

2006

The inaugural exchange was moderated by Altariel, and included only fanfiction. It ran on a gift exchange basis in the bujold_fic livejournal. Sign ups occurred in April and works were posted in May. There were 18 works by 17 participants, with Vorkosigan & Chalion fandoms represented.

2007

The second exchange was moderated by Quietann, and again ran on a gift-exchange, fanfiction-only basis. Sharing Knife was included for the first time,[2] but no works appear to have been written. Sign ups occurred in May–June, and works were posted in July–September. There were 17 works by 16 participants, with Vorkosigan & Chalion fandoms represented.

2008

The 2008 challenge was moderated by Sahiya, who changed the format to a fest in which prompts are suggested and claimed, without an exchange element. She explained This has a couple of advantages over an exchange format, the first being that it's a lot less stress for both participants and the mod, and the second being that you have a lot more control over what you end up writing. So it's the community and fun of a ficathon without the hassle.[3] The new format was popular with participants. Fan art was also included for the first time. Prompting occurred in June, claiming in June–July, and works were posted in August. A total of 38 works were created by 20 participants. There were two Sharing Knife stories;Vorkosigan & Chalion were also represented, and there were also crossovers with Doctor Who, Temeraire & Harry Potter.

Popular works included:

2009

The 2009 fest was moderated by Firefly124, and retained the prompt-based fest format. As well as fanfiction & art, craft, mixes & vids were included,[4] but only fiction & art were posted. Prompting occurred in July, and works were posted in August. No masterlist appears to have been compiled; the following prompt-inspired works, all in the Vorkosigan universe, were published during the suggested timeframe:

2010

The 2010 fest was moderated by Sahiya, with assistance from Philomytha. Prompting occurred in July, claiming in July–August, and works were posted in August. A collection was created on Archive of Our Own for the fest, but many stories continued to be posted to the bujold_fic livejournal or personal livejournals, as in previous years. A total of 37 works, all fanfiction, were written by 17 participants, with Vorkosigan, Chalion & Sharing Knife all represented.

Popular stories included:

2011

The 2011 fest was moderated by Sahiya, and moved to AO3 for prompting & claiming for the first time. AO3 membership was not required for participation as Glishara & Philomytha volunteered to act as proxies. Posting was either to an AO3 collection or to livejournal,[5][6] and many participants who posted to AO3 continued to announce their works at bujold_fic. Prompting occurred in July, and works were posted in July–September. A total of 21 stories were written by 14 participants, with Vorkosigan, Chalion & Sharing Knife all represented.

Popular stories included:

2012

The 2012 fest was moderated by Philomytha. The recently published Captain Vorpatril's Alliance was included, but used a separate AO3 sub-collection for prompts to avoid spoilers.[7] Prompting occurred in August, with stories being posted in August–September. A total of 13 stories were written by eight participants during the fest, with Vorkosigan & Sharing Knife being represented. Further stories addressing the prompts have been added to the collection subsequently.

Popular stories included:

2013

The 2013 fest was moderated by Philomytha. Prompting occurred in July, with stories being posted in July–September. A total of 14 stories were written by 10 participants during the fest, all in the Vorkosigan fandom. Further stories addressing the prompts have been added to the collection subsequently.

Popular stories included:

2015

No ficathon occurred in 2014. The 2015 fest was moderated by ExtraPenguin and, for the first time, was organised exclusively on AO3. No timeframe was suggested. Prompting started in early August, and posting commenced in late August. Eight stories by four participants had been posted by the end of the year, all in the Vorkosigan fandom. Further stories addressing the prompts have been added to the collection subsequently.
