Blanket Permission to Podfic is a way for fanfic authors to let podficcers know that they allow anyone to create podfics based on their writing. The idea behind the name is that a "blanket" statement, with or without caveats, 'covers' everything a person might want/need to know.

Often, permission is granted in a comment to a post (generally in a comm that creates podfic) asking if authors are ok with fans podficcing their works, such as the Amplificathon permission post or the Multipodicity blanket permission list. However, increasingly podficcers have advocated for authors to have a clear statement of blanket permission to podfic "somewhere easily found (such as on you journal profile, fic master post, website or archive profile)" since it "makes it much easier for the author to adjust it as they may need, and for podficcers to find it."

Sometimes the blanket statement includes caveats or limitations on that permission, such as specific works that are not to be podficced. A very common request is to ask podficcers to link to the original work and alert the author (usually so that they can squee over it). Very few authors have issued a formal Blanket No to Podfic, although some authors without a blanket permission statement have been known to say no when asked.

Tracking Blanket Permission to Podfic

Many fans have taken up different methods of tracking blanket podfic permissions. As of 2024, one popular method of tracking blanket permission statements is the Fanwork Permission Statements (FPS) List, which lists authors with a link to their blanket permission statements. The fan BrickGrass used this list as a basis for creating a Blanket Permission Highlighter extension, which highlights Archive of Our Own users who have given blanket permissions.
