Fanon and tropes
- A fairly popular theory/fanon casts Axel and Kairi as siblings. They were both children living in Radiant Garden during the same time period, and they both have red hair. Without making the two biologically related, fans still enjoy imagining that Axel may have been Kairi's babysitter or big brother figure.
- Kairi reminds Axel of his lost friend Xion. Until Axel reunites with Xion herself, Axel reacts to this with sadness and confusion.
- Axel acts as a big brother to Naminé, Xion, and Kairi. Axel met them all and separately developed unlikely friendships with them in canon. As the girls meet and form bonds of their own, they and Axel develop a group dynamic.
