Reactions and Reviews
Initially, I thought it was rather a lot of money to pay for a fanzine, but it was almost Christmas and I thought, 'What the hell.' It was money well spent as I found Gerda to be a master storyteller who brought everything to life with all the main characters in place. It begins with Catherine recovering in a private nursing home after being almost pronounced dead, but has been left suffering from total amnesia. Diana is well aware of the situation but believes it to be kinder not to inform Vincent. Of course it all comes right in the end, but not before a very bloody confrontation between Vincent and Gabriel. Together with the magnificent artwork that Gerda also produces, this zine stands as one of the classic publications.[1]
A particularly good telling of the basic SND scenario: Catherine escapes from a hospital, finds her way back to the tunnels and is reunited with Vincent. In this version, Diana knew of Catherine's survival but kept it from everyone in case Catherine did not recover from her illness and traumatic amnesia. Gabriel, also surviving, plots to kill all who had thwarted him. Though English is not the author's native language (she's Belgian), the novel is well written, well-paced, and obviously deeply felt. The R rating is for violence rather than sex; the reviewer's opinion was that PG-13 would have been more appropriate. SND fans will particularly appreciate this strong narrative, and the author's art is consistently splendid.[2]
In this SND novella, Catherine is alive, but only Diana knows of her survival. Diana has kept that knowledge to herself, theoretically in case Catherine did not recover from her illness and traumatic amnesia. The author's flier states Diana is "torn between the voice of her conscience and an impossible love". Catherine escapes from the hospital, finds her way back to the tunnels and is reunited with Vincent. Gabriel also survives and is on the hunt to kill all who thwarted him.
The R rating is more for violence than steam. [3]
